Improving electro-optic properties is essential for fabricating high-quality liquid crystal displays. Herein, by doping amorphous Mn O octahedral nanocages (a-Mn O ONCs) into a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) matrix E7, outstanding electro-optic properties of the blend are successfully obtained. At a doping concentration of 0.03 wt%, the maximum decreases of threshold voltage (V ) and saturation voltage (V ) are 34% and 31%, respectively, and the increase of contrast (C ) is 160%. This remarkable electro-optic activity can be attributed to high-efficiency charge transfer within the a-Mn O ONCs NLC system, caused by metastable electronic states of a-Mn O ONCs. To the best of our knowledge, such remarkable decreased electro-optic activity is observed for the first time from doping amorphous semiconductors, which could provide a new pathway to develop excellent energy-saving amorphous materials and improve their potential applications in electro-optical devices.

Monitoring electrical potentials with high recording site density and micrometer spatial resolution in liquid is critical in biosensing. Organic electronic materials have driven remarkable advances in the field because of their unique material properties, yet limitations in spatial resolution and recording density remain. Here, we introduce organic electro-scattering antennas (OCEANs) for wireless, light-based probing of electrical signals with micrometer spatial resolution, potentially from thousands of sites.

The linear electro-optic effect offers a valuable means to control light properties via an external electric field. Lithium niobate (LN), with its high electro-optic coefficients and broad optical transparency ranges, stands out as a prominent material for efficient electro-optic modulators. The recent advent of lithium niobate-on-insulator (LNOI) wafers has sparked renewed interest in LN for compact photonic devices.

Ferroelectric nematic liquid crystals (NFLCs) are promising electronic materials owing to their giant permittivity, polarization, and nonlinear optical coefficients. Although it is difficult to polymer-stabilize the NFLC orientation state due to their low affinity to polymers, in this study, we have succeeded in stabilizing the orientation into a blue phase (BP) three-dimensional structure by using BP polymer networks. This BP polymer-templated NFLC retains their ferroelectric properties and stabilizes with macroscopically canceled polarization due to the BP structure.

Article Synopsis
  • * ScAlN is particularly intriguing for nanophotonic applications due to its large bandgap suitable for blue wavelengths and its potential for enhanced nonlinear optical characteristics.
  • * The study examines ScAlN's Pockels effect, showing that while its electro-optic coupling is initially weak, it can be significantly improved with higher scandium doping, potentially outperforming lithium niobate in certain applications.

Electro-optically Modulated Nonlinear Metasurfaces.

Nano Lett

November 2024

The Key Laboratory of Weak-Light Nonlinear Photonics, Ministry of Education, School of Physics and TEDA Applied Physics Institute, Nankai University, Tianjin 300071, People's Republic of China.

Article Synopsis
  • Electrically reconfigurable nonlinear metasurfaces allow for dynamic control of second-harmonic generation (SHG), leading to innovative uses in signal processing, light switching, and sensing.
  • Traditional methods have limitations due to weak SHG responses in metals and constraints in quantum well systems.
  • A new approach using lithium niobate (LN) combines the electro-optic effect with SHG, achieving an 11.3% modulation depth, which enhances the potential for tunable nonlinear light sources and advanced photonic applications.
