Introduction: As a commonly used chemotherapeutic agent, fluorouracil (5-FU) has serious dose-limiting side effects. In this study, we evaluated the synergy between red American ginseng (RAG) and 5-FU on human colorectal cancer cells, and explored the potential mechanisms.

Methods: Ginsenoside contents of white American ginseng (WAG) and RAG were determined by HPLC. Cell proliferation was evaluated by MTS assay. Combination Index (CI) analysis was executed using CompuSyn software. Paraptotic events were observed after crystal violet staining. Cell cycle distribution, cyclin A expression and apoptotic induction were analyzed using flow cytometry.

Results: We observed the heat treatment remarkably increased levels of ginsenoside Rg3, 20-Rg3, Rk1 and Rg5. When the combinations of 5-FU and RAG were applied, cell proliferation inhibition rates were notably increased, indicating that RAG significantly enhanced 5-FU's effect. Additionally, CI analysis suggested that there was a synergistic action of 5-FU and RAG when combined. The cell cycle data indicated 5-FU induced S phase arrest, and the combination of 5-FU and RAG increased G1 phase. Further, the RAG's ability to enhance the anti-cancer effects of 5-FU was linked to both paraptosis and apoptosis inductions.

Conclusion: RAG may have clinical utility to decrease the dosage of 5-FU in colorectal cancer therapeutics.

Background: The toxicity of heavy metals and harmful elements is highly dependent on their chemical species. However, research on the simultaneous analysis of inorganic and organic species in complex matrices remains limited. This study presents a rapid and sensitive method for the concurrent determination of arsenic and selenium species using reversed-phase chromatography with inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry.

American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) is considered as a functional food and a medicinal plant, with its fruit containing valuable bioactive ingredients. However, limited knowledge is available regarding its antioxidant capacity, variation in bioactive components, and biosynthetic pathways at various growth stages. The present study examined the in vitro antioxidant capacity of the American ginseng fruit from Wendeng, Shandong at various growth stages, and conducted metabolomic as well as transcriptomic analyses to elucidate the accumulation patterns and biosynthesis of bioactive compounds.

The worm is a new pest injuring American ginseng . To explore its reproductive potential and then estimate its population dynamics, the authors conducted two related experiments: (1) measuring individual fecundity in its lifetime by rearing each of the parent adults alone in a wet sandy dish at 18 and 21 °C indoors; (2) testing population growth by rearing each of the parent adults together with its offspring for a time longer than two generations at 21 °C. In Experiment I, five dependent variables, namely daily mean cocoons (), cumulative cocoons (), eggs per cocoon (), daily mean eggs () and cumulative eggs (), were extracted, with each of them subject to a stepwise regression analysis on rearing time () and its power series as independent variables.

American ginseng is widely in demand as a famous medicinal herb, but the production conditions affect the content of ginsenosides in American ginseng, which in turn affects its medicinal value. Currently, it remains a challenge to simultaneously identify the origin and ginsenoside content of American ginseng in a non-destructive manner. In this study, we developed a mixed multi-task deep learning network, MMTDL, combined with near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy, for the origin traceability and total ginsenoside content prediction of American ginseng.

Introduction: Functional beverages are increasingly popular but it is important to validate their purported effects through research. The aim of the current study was to investigate the effects of a new functional energy shot on cognitive performance and mood states in healthy adults, with a focus on measuring mental energy enhancement and attenuation of negative effects associated with extended performance of mentally demanding tasks.

Methods: This study was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover trial.
