Enzymatic polymerization of lignin is an environmentally-friendly and sustainable method that is investigated for its potential in opening-up new applications of one of the most abundant biopolymers on our planet. In this work, the laccase from was successfully immobilized onto Accurel MP1000 beads (67% of protein bound to the polymeric carrier) and the biocatalyzed oxidation of Kraft lignin (KL) and lignosulfonate (LS) were carried out. Fluorescence intensity determination, phenol content analysis and size exclusion chromatography were performed in order to elucidate the extent of the polymerization reaction. The collected results show an 8.5-fold decrease of the LS samples' fluorescence intensity after laccase-mediated oxidation and a 12-fold increase of the weight average molecular weight was obtained.

The aggregation of proteins, peptides and amino acids has been a keen subject of interest owing to their implications in metabolic disorders. In this work, we investigated the self-aggregation of the unmodified aromatic amino acid l-tryptophan (Trp) into unusual spherical microstructures. Using fluorescence spectroscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), we detail the time-dependent transformation of monomeric tryptophan into spherical aggregates with distinct fluorescence characteristics (λ = 345 nm, λ = 430 nm) compared to the monomer.

The unique insertion capability of Ag into cytosine-cytosine (C-Ag-C) mismatch-base pairs enables precise fabrication of DNA-trapped silver nanoclusters (DNA-AgNCs) through varying the DNA sequences, thereby offering precise assembly of DNA-AgNCs and demonstrating great fluorescence applications. However, most of the DNA-AgNC-based fluorescence sensors have a single output signal. Herein, we developed a dimerized DNA-AgNC system through C-Ag-C connection at the 3'-end of a designed DNA.

Many marine organisms feature sensitive sensory-perceptual systems to sense the surrounding environment and respond to disturbance with intense bioluminescence. However, it remains a great challenge to develop artificial materials that can sense external disturbance and simultaneously activate intense luminescence, although such materials are attractive for visual sensing and intelligent displays. Herein, we present a new class of bioinspired smart gels constructed by integrating hydrophilic polymeric networks, metastable supersaturated salt and fluorophores containing heterogenic atoms.

Introduction: 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) fluorescence used in glioma surgery has different intensities within tumors and among different patients, some molecular and external factors have been implicated, but there is no clear evidence analyzing the difference of fluorescence according to glioma molecular characteristics. This study aimed to compare molecular factors of glioma samples with fluorescence intensity to identify potential cofounders and associations with clinically relevant tumor features.
Methods: Tumor samples of high-grade glioma patients operated using 5-ALA for guided resection were included for comparative analysis of fluorescence intensity and molecular features.

Elevated temperatures can lead to reabsorption and color drift, compromising the quality of phosphor-converted white light-emitting diode (pc-WLED) devices. To ensure the performance of WLEDs under these conditions, it is essential to develop luminescent materials that maintain stable color. Consequently, there is a pressing need for single-phase white-emitting phosphors with robust chromatic stability.
