In this work, the aqueous speciation of Rh(III) in chloride medium was investigated by UV-vis spectroscopy for ligand to metal ratios R = (Cl)/(Rh) ranging from 300 to 5000, at fixed Rh concentration (2.4 × 10 M). Under the chemical conditions of this work, no time evolution was observed, which allows for the fitting of the UV-vis data by Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Multi-Curve Resolution (MCR). From this, and by comparison with literature data, the three independent species [RhCl₄], [RhCl₅] and [RhCl₆] were identified, their individual absorption spectra derived and their respective contribution to the collected experimental UV-vis spectra calculated. Then, extraction of Rh(III) towards the ionic liquid trihexyltetradecylphosphonium chloride was performed. Comparison with the speciation data gives insight into the extraction mechanism and the extracted species.

The kinetics of aqueous thiolated arsenic oxidation.

J Hazard Mater

January 2025

Department of Geological Sciences & Engineering, Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Electronic address:

Thiolated arsenic (As) compounds have been identified in various natural and engineered environments worldwide and are important for the biogeochemical cycling of As, yet quantitative data regarding their stability and transformation rates remains scarce. This study investigates the oxidation kinetics of mono-, di-, and tri-thioarsenate at varying pH, Fe, and (thio-)As concentrations in the aqueous phase. Experiments conducted over four weeks revealed that all thioarsenates were oxidized faster at lower pH, with rates of up to several μmoles/L/d at a pH of 3.

Redox transformation and partitioning of arsenic during the hydrothermal aging of FeS-As coprecipitates under anoxic condition.

J Environ Sci (China)

July 2025

Key Laboratory of Pollution Ecology and Environmental Engineering, Institute of Applied Ecology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shenyang 110016, China. Electronic address:

In sulfidic anoxic environments, iron sulfides are widespread solid phases that play an important role in the arsenic (As) biogeochemical cycle. This work investigated the transformation process of FeS-As coprecipitates, the concurrent behavior, and the speciation of associated As under anoxic conditions. The results showed that FeS-As coprecipitates could convert to greigite and pyrite.

Since the biological activities and toxicities of 'foreign' and/or excess levels of metal ions are predominantly determined by their precise molecular nature, here we have employed high-resolution H NMR analysis to explore the 'speciation' of paramagnetic Ni(II) ions in human saliva, a potentially rich source of biomolecular Ni(II)-complexants/chelators. These studies are of relevance to the corrosion of nickel-containing metal alloy dental prostheses (NiC-MADPs) in addition to the dietary or adverse toxicological intake of Ni(II) ions by humans. Unstimulated whole-mouth human saliva samples were obtained from n = 12 pre-fasted (≥8 h) healthy participants, and clear whole-mouth salivary supernatants (WMSSs) were obtained from these via centrifugation.

The primary approach to assessing monitored natural attenuation (MNA) is currently based on a conceptual model utilizing the total contaminant concentrations, assuming a single aqueous species. However, many contaminants, such as metals and radionuclide - including iodine, can exist in multiple species that behave chemically differently in the environment and can exist simultaneously. For example, radioiodine often occurs concurrently as three major aqueous species: iodide (I), iodate (IO), and organo-I, which undergo distinct attenuation pathways and exhibit markedly different mobility and geochemical behavior.

Aqueous Solubility of Sodium and Chloride Salts of Glycine─"Uncommon" Common-Ion Effects of Self-Titrating Solids.

Although glycine is the simplest of the amino acids, its solution and solid-state properties are far from straightforward. The aqueous solubility of glycine plays an important role in various applications, including nutrition, food products, biodegradable plastics, and drug development. There is evidence that glycine in subsaturated pH 3-8 solutions forms a dimer, as suggested by several techniques.
