Introduction: The Chinese (Amur) sleeper (Perccottus glenii Dybowski, 1877) (Actinopterygii: Odontobutidae) is a freshwater fish species with high invasive potential. Diplomonads have been detected in the intestines of Chinese sleepers using light microscopy.

Aim: The aim of this study was to identify the diplomonads in Chinese sleepers using molecular-genetic methods.

Materials And Methods: The fish used in this analysis were caught in the following bodies of water in Russia between 2014 and 2016: Lake Dolgoe, the floodplain of the Ingoda River (Amur River basin), the Tsna River (the Oka River basin), and the littoral of the Kotlin Island (Gulf of Finland). Partial sequences of small subunit rRNA genes were obtained for the intestinal diplomonads of Chinese sleeper.

Results: The analysis of all sequenced samples revealed the presence of Spironucleus salmonis Moore, 1922; other Spironucleus species were not found in the sampled fish. With 82% probability, the sampled sequences of diplomonads from Chinese sleeper formed a separate cluster in the clade of S. salmonis on the phylogenetic tree.

Conclusion: This is the first record of S. salmonis in fish in the family Odontobutidae.

Background: Giardia duodenalis (G. duodenalis) is a globally distributed zoonotic protozoan that parasitizes the small intestines of humans and various mammals, such as goats and sheep. The objective of this study was to establish a convenient, accurate, and specific method based on restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) for genotyping assemblages A, B and E of G.

Article Synopsis
  • A new test was created to find four different parasites in goat poop at the same time using something called multiplex PCR, which is a special kind of DNA testing.!
  • The test was checked by using it on 116 samples of goat poop collected from different farms to see how well it worked compared to an older method called single-target PCR.!
  • The results showed that the new test was really accurate, matching results from the older test 97.5% of the time, meaning it was good at finding the parasites it was meant to detect.!

Intestinal protozoa spp., , and have been implicated in serious waterborne outbreaks worldwide. Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) is a promising approach for evaluating the disease prevalence in a catchment population in that it monitors the contamination level of the intestinal pathogens in wastewater.

Article Synopsis
  • Giardiasis is a zoonotic disease caused by the parasite Giardia intestinalis, which releases excretory and secretory products (ESPs) that include proteins and extracellular vesicles (EVs).
  • The study isolated EVs and SPs from Giardia ESPs and conducted proteomic analyses, identifying 146 proteins in SPs and 91 proteins in EVs, with unique proteins found in each.
  • Transcriptome analysis of Caco-2 cells exposed to EVs revealed 96 differentially expressed genes, suggesting that EVs influence various biological processes related to metabolism and signaling pathways in intestinal epithelial cells.
