Background: Sarcopenia describes the inevitable deterioration in muscle mass and strength that accompanies biological aging. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of resistance training (RT) on quadriceps hypertrophy and related biochemistry in sarcopenic and healthy elderly men.

Methods: A total of 31 elderly men (55-70 years old) were classified as sarcopenic and nonsarcopenic and were divided into two groups. Both groups participated in a progressive RT program for 8 weeks.

Results: Data indicated that the strength in the sarcopenic group increased more than the healthy group ( < 0.05). Quadriceps cross-sectional area also increased more in the healthy group ( < 0.05). Myostatin concentration decreased in both groups after training ( < 0.05). Follistatin and testosterone increased in the healthy group; in contrast, only testosterone increased in the sarcopenic group after training ( < 0.05).

Conclusions: The findings from this study suggest that RT improves muscle cross-sectional area and biomarker-related muscle loss in both healthy and sarcopenic elderly men. The findings also demonstrate that growth factor profiles at baseline and changes in testosterone levels play an important role in muscle hypertrophy observed in both groups.

Monopolar electrocautery is usually a safe and effective technique used in laparoscopic cholecystectomy and bile duct surgery, but it may lead to adverse consequences, even ventricular fibrillation (VF). Amiodarone is an effective antiarrhythmic drug commonly used in practice to treat ventricular and atrial arrhythmias, but it may induce tachyarrhythmia or even VF. We report a case of VF occurring twice during cholecystectomy.

Objective: In patients with primary hypertension (PH), left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is a critical predictor of cardiovascular events. We aimed to identify clinical and laboratory predictors of LVH in patients with PH.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study included 2321 patients with PH at the Fifth Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University from December 2022 to January 2024.

Testosterone, an essential sex steroid hormone, influences brain health by impacting neurophysiology and neuropathology throughout the lifespan in both genders. However, human research in this area is limited, particularly in women. This study examines the associations between testosterone levels, gray matter volume (GMV) and cerebral blood flow (CBF) in midlife individuals at risk for Alzheimer's disease (AD), according to sex and menopausal status.

Background: Computed tomography (CT)-derived low muscle mass is associated with adverse outcomes in critically ill patients. Muscle ultrasound is a promising strategy for quantitating muscle mass. We evaluated the association between baseline ultrasound rectus femoris cross-sectional area (RF-CSA) and intensive care unit (ICU) mortality.

Introduction: Water vapor thermal therapy (WVTT; REZUM™; Boston, USA) offers symptom relief with reduced risks of complications in patients with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) related to benign prostatic obstruction (BPO). WVTT therapy has been validated in the pivotal study in men with smaller prostates (< 80 cc). Yet, its feasibility for larger prostates (≥ 80 cc) remains underexplored.
