Nano-SiO₂ was immobilized onto dialdehyde cellulose (DAC) to prepare SiO₂/DAC hybrid materials. Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis and field emission scanning electron microscopy of SiO₂/DAC indicated that nano-SiO₂ had been successfully hybridized with DAC. X-ray diffraction suggested that the structure of DAC was influenced by the nano-SiO₂. SiO₂/DAC was then used as the cross-linker of collagen solutions. Gel electrophoresis patterns and FTIR reflected that cross-linking occurred between DAC and collagen, but that collagen retained the native triple-helix, respectively. Differential scanning calorimetry indicated that the thermal stability of collagen could be effectively improved by SiO₂/DAC. Dynamic rheology tests revealed that the flowability of collagens cross-linked by SiO₂/DAC was superior to that of those cross-linked by DAC; meanwhile, collagens cross-linked by SiO₂/DAC possessed a more homogeneous morphology compared to those cross-linked by DAC. The hybridization of SiO₂/DAC as a cross-linker for collagen could effectively prevent the gelation caused by excessive cross-linking, and significantly improve the thermostability of collagen, which could be helpful for collagen being applied in fields including biomaterials, cosmetics, etc.

Understanding charge transport in semiconductor quantum dot (QD) assemblies is important for developing the next generation of solar cells and light-harvesting devices based on QD technology. One of the key factors that governs the transport in such systems is related to the hybridization between the QDs. Recent experiments have successfully synthesized QD molecules, arrays, and assemblies by directly fusing the QDs, with enhanced hybridization leading to high carrier mobilities and coherent band-like electronic transport.

Planar 1D photonic crystals (1DPhCs), owing to their photonic bandgaps (PBGs) formed by unique structural interference, are widely utilized in light protection applications. Multifunctional coatings that integrate various light management functions are highly desired. In this study, we present the fabrication of dual-PBG 1DPhCs with high reflectance in both the blue and near-infrared (NIR) regions.

Context: This study presents quantum chemical analysis of 14 distinct carbon-based nanostructures (CBN), ranging from simple molecules, like benzene, to more complex structures, such as coronene, which serves as an exemplary graphene-like model. The investigation focuses on elucidating the relationships between molecular orbital (MO) energies, the energy band gaps, electron occupation numbers (eON), electronic conduction, and the compound topologies, seeking to find the one that approaches most of a graphene-like structure for in silico studies. Through detailed examination of molecular properties including chemical hardness and chemical potential, we demonstrate that the electronic exchange between orbitals is directly influenced by the structural topology of the carbon-based nanostructures, as the electron occupation numbers and the molecular orbital energies.

The safety of a 2'--methoxyethyl antisense oligonucleotide (ASO) was investigated in Mauritius cynomolgus monkeys in a 41-week Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) toxicity study after multiple intrathecal (IT) administrations. Histopathological examination revealed ectopic formation of lymphoid follicles in the spinal cord (SC) at the injection site at all doses and the presence of granular material in neurons of the SC in high-dose animals. The granular material was seen in all the segments of the SC, but mainly in the lumbar segment and persisted at the end of the 26-week recovery period, while the lymphoid follicles showed a reversibility trend.

PIWI-interacting RNAs (piRNAs) are a class of small noncoding RNAs associated with PIWI proteins within the male germline, and they play significant roles in maintaining genome stability via the modulation of gene expression. The piRNAs are implicated in the progression of various cancers, but the simultaneous monitoring of multiple piRNAs remains a challenge. Herein, we construct a single-molecule biosensor based on polymerization-transcription-mediated target regeneration for the simultaneous one-pot detection of multiple piRNAs.
