Three different polyfunctional acrylate monomers-trimethylolpropantriacrylate (TMPTA), pentaerythritol triacrylate (PETA) and di(trimethylolpropane) tetraacrylate (DTTA)-have been used as comonomers in combination with a reactive resin consisting of poly(methylmethacrylate), dissolved in its monomer methylmethacrylate. Phenanthrene has been added to form a guest⁻host system. The level of phenanthrene present may be adjusted to tailor the refractive index in the system. Prior to curing, the shear rate and temperature-dependent viscosity as a function of the composition were measured. It could be demonstrated that, with respect to different shaping methods, a tailor-made flow behaviour can be adjusted. After thermally-induced polymerization, the resulting optical (refractive index, optical transmittance) and thermomechanical (glass transition behavior, Vickers hardness) properties were characterized. A significant refractive index increase-up to a value close to 1.56 (@589 nm)-under the retention of good optical transmittance was able to be obtained. In addition, the photopolymerization behaviour was investigated to overcome the undesirable oxygen inhibition effect during the light-induced radical polymerization of acrylates. The level of acrylate units in the copolymer can compensate for the plasticizing effect of the dopant phenanthrene, enabling higher concentrations of the dopant in the guest⁻host system and therefore larger refractive index values suitable for polymer waveguide fabrication.

Article Synopsis
  • Vegetable oil, particularly castor oil, is gaining research attention due to its renewable properties and unique molecular structure.
  • Through a two-step chemical modification process, castor oil was converted into a triacrylate structure and subsequently used to create a waterborne polyurethane acrylate emulsion that undergoes UV curing.
  • The study demonstrated that increasing the MACOG content improved the thermal and mechanical properties of the coatings, highlighting potential advancements in the use of castor oil for high-performance coating applications.

A hydrophosphination reaction that is free of base, acid and catalyst, using only 2-methyltetrahydrofuran as additive has been performed. A new family of mono-, di-, tri- and tetra-phosphines compounds are obtained in good to excellent yields by adding diphenylphosphine to alkenes, mono- and polyfunctional acrylics (based on acrylate and methacrylate motifs) and acrylamide substrates. Addition of four equivalent of bio-mass derived 2-MeTHF into the reaction media improves both conversion and time of the reaction and reduces the sensitivity of the reactants over oxidation.

A novel UV-curable polyurethane acrylate (PUA) oligomer was synthesized by modifying cardanol with a polyfunctional acrylate precursor obtained through reacting pentaerythritol triacrylate with isophoronediisocyanate. Chemical structures of the obtained cardanol-based PUA (C-PUA) oligomer were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared and H NMR. Subsequently, viscosity and gel content of the C-PUA resins containing different quantities of hydroxymethyl methacrylate (HEMA) were characterized.

Bile salts tend to form micelles in aqueous media and can thereby contribute to drug solubilization; they also exhibit crystallization inhibition properties that can stabilize supersaturated drug solutions. Herein, we explore conjugation of bile salts with polysaccharides to create new, amphiphilic polysaccharide derivatives with intriguing properties, portending broad utility in various applications. We introduce efficient conjugation of cholesterol (as a model steroid), lithocholic acid, and deoxycholic acid by mild, modular olefin cross-metathesis reactions.

Thermoreversible gelation with ion-binding cross-links of variable multiplicity.

Thermoreversible gelation and liquid-liquid phase separation are theoretically studied for the gels of polyfunctional molecules (polymers) whose network junctions are formed by complexation of functional groups on the polymer chains with added metal ions. Phase diagrams on the polymer/ion/solvent concentration plane, including both sol-gel transition lines and liquid-liquid phase separation lines (spinodals), are derived as functions of the polymer functionality, molecular weight, maximum coordination number of ions, and temperature. Binding isotherms of ions are also calculated as functions of the ion concentration.
