Studies performed in the former Soviet Union were reviewed to provide interception and weathering values for radioactive particles. None of these studies were available in the English language literature before or were considered in the international reviews. The estimated mass interception fractions ranged 0.2-1.4 m kg may be explained by the size of the particles used in the research. The interrelationships among the interception fractions, plants biomass and size of radioactive particles were determined for different plants: spring and winter wheat, maize, rice, pasture and sown grass. A filtration model rather accurately approximated data for pasture grass and some other crops but does not reflect properly patterns of the interception fraction dependence on biomass for perennial sown grass. The values derived have been compared with some expected values reported by the IAEA's Handbook of parameter values for the prediction of radionuclide transfer in temperate environments (TRS 472) where possible. The information presented can be used in the current updating of parameters recommended for environmental impact assessments.

Evidence for low bioavailability of dietary nanoparticulate cerium in a freshwater food chain.

Aquat Toxicol

December 2024

ANSTO, Nuclear Science and Technology Division, Lucas Heights, NSW 2234, Australia.

Radioactive Ce in ionic (I-Ce), nano (N-Ce, 11 ± 9 nm mean primary particle size ± standard deviation) and micron-sized (M-Ce, 530 ± 440 µm) forms associated with natural and artificial diets in natural river water and synthetic freshwater were used to measure the real-time biokinetics of dietary Ce assimilation in a freshwater food chain. The model food chain consisted of microalgae (Raphidocelis subcapitata), snails (Potamopyrgus antipodarum) and prawns (Macrobrachium australiense). Pulse-chase experiments showed that 91-100 % of all forms of cerium associated with all diets and water types were eliminated from the digestive system of the snail and prawn within 24 h, with no detectable cerium assimilation.

Marine and atmospheric transport modeling supporting nuclear preparedness in Norway: Recent achievements and remaining challenges.

Sci Total Environ

January 2025

Center for Environmental Radioactivity (CERAD) CoE, Norwegian University of Life Sciences, P.O. Box 5003, N-1432 Ås, Norway; Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Natural Resource Management, Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), P.O.Box 5003, NO-1432 Ås, Norway.

Numerical transport models are important tools for nuclear emergency decision makers in that they rapidly provide early predictions of dispersion of released radionuclides, which is key information to determine adequate emergency protective measures. They can also help us understand and describe environmental processes and can give a comprehensive assessment of transport and transfer of radionuclides in the environment. Transport of radionuclides in air and ocean is affected by a number of different physico-chemical processes.

Coal mined in the shut-down Raša mine in Istria, Croatia had a high organic sulphur content. What has remained of its local combustion is a coal and ash waste (legacy site) whose trace element and radionuclide composition in soil has enduring consequences for the environment. The aim of this study was to follow up on previous research and investigate the potential impact on surrounding soil and local residents by characterising the site's ash and soil samples collected in two field campaigns.

Metals and metalloids pollution levels, partitioning, and sources in the environmental compartments of a small urban catchment in Moscow megacity.

Environ Pollut

December 2024

Faculty of Geography, Lomonosov Moscow State University, Leninskie Gory 1, 119991, Moscow, Russian Federation; Institute of Environmental Radioactivity, Fukushima University, 1 Kanayagawa, Fukushima City, Fukushima Prefecture, 960-1296, Japan.

This study examines the contamination levels and sources of 32 metals and metalloids (MMs) in environmental compartments (roadside soil, road dust, and river suspended sediments) of a small urbanized river catchment located in Moscow megacity. MMs partitioning between particle size fractions (PM, PM, and PM) was analyzed by ICP-MS and ICP-AES methods. The pollution level of particle size fractions with MMs decreases in the following series: road dust > suspended sediments > soils.

Radiobiological studies are ongoing to understand the consequences of internal exposure to neutron-activated radioactive microparticles, which were sprayed over experimental rats and mice. Special attention in these experiments is given to internal irradiation with radioactive microparticles with short-lived neutron-activated radionuclides 31Si (T1/2 = 2.62 h) and 56Mn (T1/2 = 2.
