AI Article Synopsis

  • The study assessed the knowledge of hypertension among 980 hypertensive patients receiving treatment in Spain, revealing that many lacked basic understanding about their condition and its implications.
  • Findings showed a high rate of non-adherence to medication (56.6%), primarily due to forgetfulness, and significant gaps in knowledge about hypertension's risks, particularly regarding kidney health.
  • The research highlights the need for targeted educational interventions to improve patients' understanding and management of hypertension, as knowledge levels were statistically linked to education levels.

Article Abstract

Aims: To evaluate the grade of knowledge of hypertension in hypertensive patients.

Method: Cross-sectional descriptive multicentre study. Primary and specialized care centres in Spain.

Participants: 980 hypertensive patients, older than 18 years, with pharmacological treatment.

Main Variables: Years of diagnosis, risk factors, blood pressure, abdominal circumference, body mass index, adherence to medication (Morisky-Green test) and the items of a validated questionnaire on knowledge.

Results: 50% were women, mean age 65 years. Seventy-eight percent lived with family, 46% over 10 years old diagnosed with hypertension. In relation to adherence to medication, 56.6% were not compliant, forgetting being the first cause. Knowledge about hypertension 41.7% said that no one had explained it, 35.8% did not consider hypertension a lifelong process, and only 42.3% knew the objectives of blood pressure. The area of major lack of knowledge of the risk of hypertension was the problems caused by hypertension in the kidney, only 48.6% answered affirmatively. In relation to medication, only 41.4% knew it is for life. Statistically significant differences were also observed between the level of knowledge and the level of studies (p<.001).

Conclusions: Basic knowledge about hypertension remains low in these patients. These results enable future interventions to be oriented by promoting therapeutic education to the patient and improving their involvement in the disease in order to better control their hypertension.

Health event prediction is empowered by the rapid and wide application of electronic health records (EHR). In the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), precisely predicting the health related events in advance is essential for providing treatment and intervention to improve the patients outcomes. EHR is a kind of multi-modal data containing clinical text, time series, structured data, etc.

Background: There is a lack of evidence to suggest that outcomes of adolescent and adult-onset glomerular disease differ. Still, most glomerular disease trials include adults but exclude adolescents.

Methods: We designed a retrospective study using the CureGN database to compare individuals with adolescent-onset glomerular disease relative to individuals with older and younger age at onset.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been a global pandemic affecting millions of people's lives, which has led to 'post-COVID-19 fatigue'. Alarmingly, severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) not only infects the lungs but also influences the heart and brain. Endothelial cell dysfunction and hypercoagulation, which we know occur with this infection, lead to thrombo-inflammation that can manifest as many myriad cardio-cerebrovascular disorders, such as brain fog, fatigue, cognitive dysfunction, etc.

Wnt/β-catenin and notch signaling pathways in cardiovascular disease: Mechanisms and therapeutics approaches.

Wnt and Notch signaling pathways play crucial roles in the development and homeostasis of the cardiovascular system. These pathways regulate important cellular processes in cardiomyocytes, endothelial cells, and smooth muscle cells, which are the key cell types involved in the structure and function of the heart and vasculature. During embryonic development, Wnt and Notch signaling coordinate cell fate specification, proliferation, differentiation, and morphogenesis of the heart and blood vessels.
