The study was focused on assessment of potential health risks of paper-based food contact materials (FCMs) in a step-wise approach using three toxicological bioassays in vitro and chemical analyses of migrating contaminants. 3T3 NRU cytotoxicity test showed high sensitivity to detect basal toxicity of FCMs extracts and served as a first-line test for selection of samples for further testing. The reconstructed human intestine model EpiIntestinal showed more realistic tissue response than cell culture monolayer and higher resistance despite prolonged exposure to the selected 6 samples, i.e. negligible decrease of viability and intestinal penetration, nevertheless an increase of IL-8 after exposure to black printed sample extract. Yeast based assays identified weak agonistic/antagonostic activity to human androgen receptor of the black printed sample. In accordance with the biological effects, the targeted LC and GC analytical methods confirmed the presence of high amounts of phthalates, photoinitiators and PAHs that could justify the hazard of the black printed sample. Heavily printed uncoated FCMs are recognized not to be suitable for direct contact with food. The selected bioassays and chemical analyses might be useful tools to detect targeted biological effects of xenobiotics suspected to contribute to human exposure from food.

Printing and dyeing wastewater (PDW) is characterized by various pollutants, making it one of the most difficult industrial wastewaters to treat and poses a serious threat to the natural environment and public health. This study investigated the use of an anaerobic-aerobic system combined with bioaugmentation using Ochrobactrum anthropi S1 to treat PDW. The results indicated that after three rounds of inoculation, Ochrobactrum anthropi S1 successfully colonized the system, achieving final removal efficiencies of reactive black 5, Cr(Ⅵ), COD, and ammonia nitrogen of 95 %, 65 %, 90 %, and 85 %, respectively.

This colorimetric sensor is sensitive to Total Volatile Base Nitrogen (TVB-N) levels, providing a correct indication of fish freshness and spoilage. To describe racial and ethnic representativeness of the local health department (LHD) workforce compared with the populations served. In this study, we used a cross-sectional design of the 2021 Public Health Workforce Interests and Needs Survey, 2019 National Association of County and City Health Officials Profile data, and other sources to estimate the racial and ethnic representativeness of LHD workforce. We calculated representativeness as a binary measure of at least representative of the populations served for each race and ethnicity group.

Sacrificial templating offers the ability to create interconnected pores within 3D printed filaments and to control pore morphology. Beta-tricalcium phosphate (TCP) bone tissue engineering (BTE) scaffolds were fabricated with multiscale porosity: (i) macropores from direct ink writing (DIW, a material extrusion 3D printing technique), (ii) micropores from oil templating, and (iii) smaller micropores from partial sintering. The hierarchically porous scaffolds possessed a total porosity of 58-70 %, comprising 54-63 % interconnected open pores.
