Semirigid cervical spine collar and risk of missing significant soft tissue injuries.

We report the case of an initial misdiagnosis of significant scalp soft tissue hidden beneath a semirigid cervical collar. A 16-year-old unrestrained rear seat passenger was involved in an RTA sustaining a subdural haematoma, cervical spine fractures and what was initially diagnosed as a significant degloving scalp injury. The patient was admitted to the intensive care unit intubated sedated, and with a cervical collar. The scalp injury was dressed with a view that potential reconstructive surgery would be needed subsequently.This case demonstrates that while cervical collars remain a fundamental aspect of initial prehospital care in trauma, they have potential drawbacks to their use, which need to be carefully noted. Some of these drawbacks have been reported extensively in the literature. This case outlines the necessity of a thorough secondary survey in the trauma patient as the cervical collar can obscure the assessment of significant head and neck soft tissue injuries.

Reconstruction of trunk debridement after necrotizing fasciitis complicating varicella lesions with NovoSorb biodegradable temporizing matrix and skin graft: A pediatric case report.

This clinical case report describes the reconstructive management of a child who developed a rare aggressive soft tissue infection - necrotizing fasciitis - complicating varicella skin lesions, with a synthetic dermal regenerative template - NovoSorb Biodegradable Temporizing Matrix - in conjunction with a split thickness meshed skin graft. The scarcity of this clinical case, the need to cover large skin defect promptly while facing infectious and pediatric challenges make it interesting to describe NovoSorb Biodegradable Temporizing Matrix in addition to split thickness meshed skin graft a novel treatment in necrotizing fasciitis of the child. A rapid surgical treatment followed by this reconstructive strategy achieved an acceptable functional and aesthetic result, with timely healing despite the severity and extensive surface area of the infection.

Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are rare congenital vascular malformations with associated morbidities. We describe a neonatal case of upper limb high-flow AVM presenting with upper limb soft tissue mass and postnatal high-output heart failure. Doppler study suggested high-flow AVM, and later magnetic resonance angiography of the right upper limb confirmed the diagnosis.
