Herein appropriateness of nonfunctionalized mesoporous silica nanoparticles SBA-15 and functionalized with (3-chloropropyl)triethoxysilane (→ SBA-15~Cl) and (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (→ SBA-15~NH) on delivery of physically adsorbed PhSn(CH)OH (Sn6) is evaluated. Fluorescent nanomaterial, bearing isatoic moiety, loaded with Sn6 (→ SBA-15~NF|Sn6) was used for cellular uptake study. The fluorescent nanomaterial is efficiently acquired and distributed into the cytoplasm of the cells even after 2 h of cultivation. According to the attained data, all SBA-15 materials loaded with Sn6 diminished cellular viability in dose dependent manner while carriers alone (SBA-15, SBA-15~Cl, SBA-15~NH) did not show cytotoxicity against B16 cells. According to the MC values structural modification of SBA-15 did not improve the efficacy of tested drug. While progressive apoptosis was detected upon the treatment with SBA-15|Sn6, exposure of cells to SBA-15~NH|Sn6 revealed extinguished apoptosis in time, accompanied with lower caspase activity. This effect is probably due to triggered autophagic process under the treatment with the SBA-15~NH|Sn6, thus opposed to apoptosis. Presented results suggested that functionalization of SBA-15 was not beneficial for the efficacy of loaded drug, thus, all of them are almost equally efficient considering loaded Sn6 content. Importantly, functionalization of SBA-15 does have an influence on the mode of action and differentiation inducing properties.

A scanning electron microscopy study of projectile entry fractures in cortical bone; genesis and microarchitectural features.

The present paper presents a scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis of the genesis and microarchitecture of experimentally induced cortical entry fractures in porcine scapulae impacted at velocities ranging from 54 to 897 m/s. SEM observation was conducted on polyurethane replicas cast from negative silicone moulds. Analysis of the sequence of fracture processes operative during projectile impact revealed the presence of ring cracks at the site of impact, confirming that penetration in sandwich bones is achieved by cone crack propagation.

Insensitive high explosives are increasingly being used to replace more sensitive formulations, however large quantities of environmentally hazardous wastewater are generated from loading, assembling and packing processes. Currently, there is limited literature regarding the treatment of wastewater contaminated with these hazardous insensitive high explosive materials such as 1,3,5-trinitroperhydro- 1,3,5-triazine (RDX), 2,4-dinitoranisole (DNAN) and 3-nitro-1,2,4-triazol-5-one (NTO). The preferred method of explosive wastewater treatment is adsorption by activated carbon, usually through treatment columns or fluidised beds that are simple to operate and cost effective.

Interaction and thermal studies on graphene oxide in NC/DEGDN/GO nanocomposites.

Before considering the uses of graphene oxide (GO) in nitrate ester-based materials for performance and safety improvement, its interaction, compatibility and dispersion with the host matrices need to be well understood. This work addresses the interaction and dispersity of GO with nitrocellulose (NC)/diethylene glycol dinitrate (DEGDN)-based nanocomposites. The GO and DEGDN were successfully synthesised and characterised.

Strain rate dependence of work of fracture tests on bone and similar tissues: Reflections on testing methods and mineral content effects.

This paper is concerned with the effect of different strain rate on the Work of Fracture (W) of various vertebrate mineralised tissues, controlling for the effect of mineral content and Young's modulus of elasticity. Using specimens of uniform shape and size values for the Work of Fracture of specimens tested at various deformation rates, and also the energy absorbed by notched specimens in impact, are reported. The results indicated that, of those tested, for most bone specimens the Work of Fracture measurements were constant like in the case for a 'material property'.
