Case Summary: An adult cat presented with neurological signs and marked icterus. Clinical pathology tests detected increased serum alkaline phosphatase levels, as well as alanine aminotransferase, total bilirubin, unconjugated bilirubin and conjugated bilirubin above the normal reference intervals. Ultrasonography showed hepatomegaly and a dilated gall bladder. Following these results, the cat was referred for a cholecystectomy owing to a clinical suspicion of obstructive cholecystitis. The animal died in the postoperative period and was referred for necropsy. Grossly, the animal had marked icterus. On the cortical surface and in the brain parenchyma there were marked yellowish areas. The liver was diffusely reddish-orange, enlarged and the capsular surface was slightly irregular. The gall bladder was absent. At its anatomical site and surrounding the common hepatic duct, a whitish nodular neoplasia of 2.0 cm was found. Microscopically, a cholangioma was diagnosed in the region of the common hepatic duct. In the white matter of the cerebellar vermis, there was axonal degeneration associated with gliosis. In the Purkinje neuron layer there was slight multifocal necrosis. Some neurons contained amorphous and brownish pigment (bilirubin) in the cytoplasm. Clinical and pathological findings indicated hepatic and post-hepatic icterus from obstructive cholangioma, resulting in kernicterus.
Relevance And Novel Information: Kernicterus is a neurological disorder that is rarely diagnosed in animals, especially in adults. This report provides evidence that kernicterus can occur in adult cats, secondary to increased unconjugated and conjugated bilirubin concentrations.

This study aimed to define the antitumor effect of ethanolic extract of Pistacia vera leaves (PEE) toward breast cancer both in vitro and in vivo using dimethyl-benz(a)anthracene (DMBA)-induced breast tumor in adult female rats. PEE showed a potent antioxidant effect toward both DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) and ABTS (2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) radicals with IC values of 72.6 and 107.

Introduction: Chronic hand ischaemia may affect some haemodialysis patients with an arteriovenous fistula (AVF) or graft (AVG), a condition known as haemodialysis access-induced distal ischaemia (HAIDI). Duplex ultrasonography (DUS) can provide comprehensive insights into anatomical and perfusion properties, and measuring the hand acceleration time (HAT) has been demonstrated to be sensitive within the framework of chronic upper limb ischaemia.
Methods And Analysis: This single-centre, prospective cohort study will involve adult end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients requiring either AVF or AVG for haemodialysis.

Background: While immune function is known to play a mechanistic role in Alzheimer's disease (AD), whether immune proteins in peripheral circulation influence the rate of amyloid-b (Aβ) progression remains unknown.
Method: Using the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging (BLSA; n = 196; mean follow-up: 5 years/4 scans), we identified immune-related proteins in plasma (candidate proteins) related to rates of change in cortical Aβ levels, as measured by C-PiB PET. Along with identifying genetic variants that contributed to candidate protein associations, characterizing their relationships with tau-PET and changes in ADRD biomarkers (Aβ, NfL, GFAP, pTau-181), and assessing their expression patterns in human microglia, we leveraged data from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study to determine if changes in candidate protein levels precede Ab = β onset (n = 272), and whether they predict 20-year dementia risk during mid-life (n = 11,596) and 8-year dementia risk during late-life (n = 4,288).
Background: There is growing evidence that discourse (i.e., connected speech) could serve as a cost-effective and ecologically valid means of identifying individuals with prodromal Alzheimer's disease.

Background: The Visual Cognitive Assessment Test (VCAT) is a visual based, language neutral cognitive assessment validated across cultures and ethnicities, that allows for early diagnosis of cognitive impairment. The VCAT assess domains of cognition - Memory, Visuospatial function, attention, language and Executive function. The Mild Behavioural Impairment Checklist (MBI-C) was developed to assess five domains of NPS - Decreased motivation, emotional dysregulation, impulse control, social inappropriateness and abnormal beliefs/perceptions Current research indicates an association between MBI symptom severity and poorer cognitive performance in the domains of memory.
