Objective: To explore the effect of electroacupuncture on the improvement of insulin resistance after knee joint replacement based on the combined spinal and epidural anesthesia and postoperative epidural analgesia.

Methods: Eighty patients with insulin resistance but normal blood glucose were randomly divided into a control group and an observation group, 40 cases in each group. Both groups of patients underwent combined spinal and epidural anesthesia and postoperative epidural analgesia for knee arthroplasty. On the basis of the treatment, electroacupuncture (EA) was applied during the operation and within 1 month after the operation in the observation group, and EA was used at Hegu (LI 4), Qihai (CV 6), Zhongwan (CV 12), Pishu (BL 20), Shenshu (BL 23), etc. once every other day. The control group was not treated with electroacupuncture. Fasting blood glucose and fasting insulin were recorded 30 min before surgery (T), immediately (T), 1 d (T), 3 d (T), 7 d (T) and 1 month (T) after surgery, and the insulin resistance (IR) index was calculated.

Results: Compared with those at T time point, the IR index of the control group at T, T, T and T time points and the observation group at T, T, T time points were lower (all <0.05). Compared with the control group at the same time point, the IR index of the T and T time points in the observation group was significantly lower (both <0.05), and it was lower than the insulin resistance standard.

Conclusion: Combined spinal and epidural anesthesia and postoperative epidural analgesia can improve short-term insulin resistance. Combined with EA, the improvement of insulin resistance is more obviously and longer.

Aerobic exercise attenuates high-fat diet-induced glycometabolism impairments in skeletal muscle of rat: role of EGR-1/PTP1B signaling pathway.

Nutr Metab (Lond)

Objective: Impaired skeletal muscle glycogen synthesis contributes to insulin resistance (IR). Aerobic exercise reported to ameliorate IR by augmenting insulin signaling, however the detailed mechanism behind this improvement remains unclear. This study investigated whether aerobic exercise enhances glycogen anabolism and insulin sensitivity via EGR-1/PTP1B signaling pathway in skeletal muscle of rats.

Thyroid function, autoimmunity, thyroid volume, and metabolic profile in people with Hashimoto thyroiditis.

BMC Endocr Disord

Basic and Clinical Immunology, Department of Pathology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Porto, Porto, Portugal.

Background: Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) is associated with high cardiovascular risk. Thyroid volume has a notable dispersion of values in these patients. This study aims to clarify the association between thyroid antibodies, thyroid morphology, insulin resistance, and lipid profile in patients with HT.

Background/aim: To elucidate the relationship between metabolic syndrome (Mets) and somatic composition [fat mass, fat-free (FF) mass, and fat to fat-free (F-FF) ratio] among health checkup recipients (7,776 males and 10,121 females).

Patients And Methods: We classified study subjects into four types considering Japanese criteria for Mets; Type A is for males with waist circumference (WC) <85 cm and females with WC <90 cm, Type B is for males with WC ≥85 cm and females with WC ≥90 cm, but without any metabolic abnormalities, Type C is for males with WC ≥85 cm and females with WC ≥90 cm and one metabolic disorder (pre-Mets), and Type D is Mets. We compared baseline characteristics among types of A, B, C, and D.

Porphyra haitanensis proteins (PHP) are natural proteins with various nutritional and biological values. This study was to analyze the composition, stability, and antioxidant activity of PHP before and after simulation gastrointestinal digestion (SGD). Caenorhabditis elegans was used as the model to investigate the functional activity and potential mechanisms of action of the PHP digestion products (PHPDP).

Association of hemoglobin levels with metabolic traits in women with PCOS.

Acta Obstet Gynecol Scand

December 2024

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Medical Research Centre, Research Unit of Clinical Medicine, University of Oulu, Oulu University Hospital, Oulu, Finland.

Introduction: Within normal variation, higher hemoglobin (Hb) levels are associated with poorer metabolic profile in population cohorts, underlying the link between oxygen delivery and cell metabolism. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder among women and is commonly accompanied by metabolic derangements. In this study we sought to investigate Hb levels, and their metabolic associations, in women with PCOS.
