Anaemia affects quality of life and radiographic outcome in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In a cross-sectional study with 779 patients, we assessed the prognostic potential of the major haematopoietic regulators, hepcidin and erythropoietin, comparing their serum concentrations with respect to different anaemia types, inflammatory activity, anti-cytokine-specific treatment effects and iron deficiency (ID) indices. The results showed that clinical disease activity was more closely associated with haemoglobin levels than with anti-tumour necrosis factor-alpha or interleukin 6 receptor effects. In ID, hepcidin was suppressed, independently of inflammation. Erythropoietin levels were inappropriately low in relation to the degree of anaemia, but, in contrast to low haemoglobin, not directly associated with joint damage progression. Hepcidin and erythropoietin levels are intimately connected with inflammation and ID. Interventional studies on these important targets are already in progress.

Obesity and iron deficiency (ID) are widespread health issues, with subclinical inflammation in obesity potentially contributing to ID through unclear mechanisms. The aim of the present work was to elucidate how obesity-associated inflammation disturb iron metabolism and to investigate the effect of intravenous (IV) iron supplementation on absolute iron deficient pre-obese (BMI 25.0-29.

Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) and iron deficiency anemia coexist around the world, particularly in children and women of reproductive age in low- and middle-income countries. Within this scenario, there is a known interaction between vitamin A and iron, and it has been postulated that lack of vitamin A impairs iron metabolism, leading to vitamin A deficiency anemia (VADA). Current animal, epidemiological, and clinical studies support this notion.

Hypoxia-inducible factor activators: a novel class of oral drugs for the treatment of anemia of chronic kidney disease.

Anemia is a hallmark of chronic kidney disease (CKD), worsens with disease progression, and profoundly affects a patient's well-being. Major pathogenic factors are inadequate kidney erythropoietin (EPO) production and absolute and functional iron deficiency. The 2 mainstays of current anemia treatment are a) replacement therapy with recombinant EPO or 1 of its glycosylated derivatives, administered subcutaneously or intravenously, and b) intravenous (IV) iron injections.

Hepcidin is a biomarker produced by hepatocytes in chronic disease anemia and is known to increase during chronic inflammation. This study compares the hepcidin levels in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) patients and controls, evaluating its relationship with anemia and systemic inflammation in IPF patients. This study included 82 IPF patients and 31 controls.

The primary studies of epigallocatechin-3-gallate in improving brain injury induced by chronic high-altitude natural environment in rats by 7.0T high-field MR imaging.

Background: Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) is one of the most abundant and important bioactive polyphenolic compounds in green tea. However, despite its potent antioxidant effects, its neuroprotective effects on chronic high altitude (HA)-induced nerve damage have not been reported. The purpose of this study is to use quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) with pathology to dynamically evaluate the status of brain damage and the effect of EGCG.
