Copper is an essential element in many biological processes and plays an important role in carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. Excess or deficiency of Cu ions can cause disturbances in cellular homeostasis and damage the central nervous system. Here, for the first time, two functionalized silica gel (SG-A and SG-B) adsorbents were prepared and tested for copper detection via the reactions of chlorinated silica gel with two novel D-π-A Schiff base compounds: 2-amino-3-(quinolin-2-ylmethyleneamino)maleonitrile (A) and 2-(4-(diethylamino)-2-hydroxybenzylideneamino)-3-aminomaleonitrile (B) in the thionyl chloride solution, respectively. SG-A and SG-B as adsorbents filled in a microcolumn were used to enrich trace Cu ions in foods and water with the detection of flame atomic absorption spectrometry. Because of the strong coordination between two D-π-A Schiff base compounds and Cu ions, the stable heterocyclic Cu-SG-A/B complex is formed. For a sample volume of 30 mL, detection limits of 0.09 μg L and 0.15 μg L have been achieved. The results of selectivity study show that the two adsorbents can selectively extract Cu in complex matrixes with other metal cations. The methods have been successfully applied to the determination of Cu content in various real samples, and the detection sensitivity that we report here is better than most results reported using modified silica gels.

The study aimed to develop a superhydrophobic coating on the aluminium alloy 2024-T3 surface. The desired surface roughness and low surface energy were achieved with SiO nanoparticles, synthesised via the Stöber method and modified with alkyl silane (AS) or perfluoroalkyl silane (FAS). To enhance particle adhesion to the alloy substrate, nanoparticles were incorporated into a hybrid sol-gel coating composed of tetraethyl orthosilicate, methyl methacrylate, and 3-methacryloxypropyl trimethoxysilane.

Stability and Rheological Properties of the Novel Silica-Based Organogel-A Drug Carrier with High Solubilization Potential.

Materials (Basel)

January 2025

Department of Applied Chemistry, Faculty of Chemistry, Adam Mickiewicz University, Uniwersytetu Poznańskiego 8, 61-614 Poznań, Poland.

Dissolution of a poorly soluble active pharmacological substance in a drug carrier usually requires advanced techniques and production equipment. The use of novel carriers such as microemulsions, vesicles, or nanocarriers might entail various limitations concerning production cost, formulation stability, or active substance capacity. In this paper, we present a novel fumed silica-based organogel as a low-cost, simple preparation drug or cosmetic carrier with interesting rheological properties and high solubilization capacity.

Hydroxyapatite (HAP) is a well-known medically renowned bioactive material known for its excellent biocompatibility and mechanical stability, but it lacks fast bioactivity. The restricted release of ions from hydroxyapatite encourages the search for a faster bioactive material that could replicate other properties of HAP. A new sol-gel-mediated potentially bioactive glass material that could mimic the structure of HAP but can surpass the performance of HAP bioactively has been formulated in this study.

By a simple condensation reaction, the receptor with anthraquinone moiety was synthesized and its sensing properties were explored in the anion sensing studies via colorimetric, UV-vis studies, fluorescence studies, and DFT calculations. The synthesized receptor senses both acetate and hypochlorite ions in DMSO medium. By the addition of all anions into the receptor the colour change was observed from pink to light purple colour for acetate ion and pink to light blue for hypochlorite ion.
