The capacity and condition under which the lateral transfer of olfactory memory is possible in insects is still debated. Here, we present evidence in two species of honeybees, and , consistent with the lack of ability to transfer olfactory associative memory in a proboscis extension response (PER) associative conditioning paradigm, where the untrained antenna is blocked by an insulating coat. We show that the olfactory system on each side of the bee can learn and retrieve information independently and the retrieval using the antenna on the side contralateral to the trained one is not affected by the training. Using the setup in which the memory on the contralateral side has been reported at 3 h after training, we see that the memory is available on the contralateral side immediately after training. In the same setup, coating the antenna with an insulator on the training side does not prevent learning, pointing to a possible insufficiency of the block of odor stimuli in this setup. Moreover, the behavior of the bee as a whole can be predicted if the sides are assumed to learn and store independently, and the organism as a whole is able to retrieve the memory if either of the sides have the memory.

The photoperiod has been considered to be a key environmental factor in sheep reproduction, and some studies have shown that the thyroid gland plays an important role in mammalian reproduction, but the molecular mechanism is still unclear. In this study, we used the artificial-light-controlled, ovariectomized, and estradiol-treated model (OVX + E2 model); healthy and consistent 2-3-year-old Sunite multiparous ewes were collected; and thyroids were collected for testing, combined with RNA-seq technology and bioinformatics analysis, to analyze the effects of different photoperiods (long photoperiod treatment for 42 days, LP42; short photoperiod treatment for 42 days, SP42; SP42 transferred to LP42, SPLP42) on the variations in the miRNA profiles of the thyroid gland. A total of 105 miRNAs were differentially expressed in the thyroid gland, most of which were new miRNAs.

In nature, animal vocalizations can provide crucial information about identity, including kinship and hierarchy. However, lab-based vocal behavior is typically studied during brief interactions between animals with no prior social relationship, and under environmental conditions with limited ethological relevance. Here, we address this gap by establishing long-term acoustic recordings from Mongolian gerbil families, a core social group that uses an array of sonic and ultrasonic vocalizations.

Chemosensory learning is a lifelong process of acquiring perceptual expertise and semantic knowledge about chemical stimuli within the everyday environment. In the research context, it is usually simulated using olfactory training, which typically involves repeated exposure to a set of odors over a period of time. Following olfactory training, enhanced olfactory performance has been observed in adults, and similar evidence is beginning to emerge in children.

This study investigates quality changes occurred in sliced pork belly with different fat content during refrigerated storage, and the potential of spectral imaging technology in predicting quality properties. Pork bellies with different fat levels (low 'LF', medium 'MF' and high 'HF') were selected from slaughtering houses and directly transferred to the laboratory. The sliced bellies were packed in modified atmosphere packages with high oxygen levels (80 %) and the essential visual and olfactory characteristics, microbiological load, pH, lipid oxidation and colour values were assessed throughout 20 days of refrigerated storage.

is a broad-spectrum insect-repelling tree species because of its high content of terpenoids. However, it is curious that , a recently recorded wood-boring pest, has widely infested plantations across various administrative districts in Shanghai. The larvae, being concealed within the trunk of trees, exhibit characteristics such as hidden activity, strong destructiveness, and being difficult to control.
