Inhibition and evasion of neutrophil microbicidal responses by .

mBio

December 2024

Department of Microbiology and Immunology, College of Medicine, University of Louisville, Louisville, Kentucky, USA.

Unlabelled: species evade degradation and proliferate within alveolar macrophages as an essential step for the manifestation of disease. However, most intracellular bacterial pathogens are restricted in neutrophils, which are the first line of innate immune defense against invading pathogens. Bacterial degradation within neutrophils is mediated by the fusion of microbicidal granules to pathogen-containing phagosomes and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by the phagocyte NADPH oxidase complex.

Legionnaires disease is a serious pneumonia caused by Legionella bacteria. During November 2022-June 2024, CDC was notified of 12 cases of Legionnaires disease among travelers on two cruise ships; eight on cruise ship A and four on cruise ship B. CDC, in collaboration with the cruise lines, initiated investigations to ascertain the potential sources of on-board exposure after notification of the second potentially associated case for each ship.

Free-living amoebae (FLA) are common in both natural and engineered freshwater ecosystems. They play important roles in biofilm control and contaminant removal through the predation of bacteria and other taxa. Bacterial predation by FLA is also thought to contribute to pathogen dispersal and infectious disease transmission in freshwater environments via the egestion of viable bacteria.

The One Health approach, recognizing the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health, has gained significance amid emerging zoonotic diseases and antibiotic resistance concerns. This paper aims to demonstrate the utility of a collaborative tool, the SIEGA, for monitoring infectious diseases across domains, fostering a comprehensive understanding of disease dynamics and risk factors, highlighting the pivotal role of One Health surveillance systems. Raw whole-genome sequencing is processed through different species-specific open software that additionally reports the presence of genes associated to anti-microbial resistances and virulence.

Article Synopsis
  • The transmission risk within built environments, particularly through aerosol pathways, poses a significant concern, leading to the need for effective prevention and control measures.
  • A thorough literature review examined 96 relevant studies, highlighting various sources of transmission and the impact of factors like poor water system maintenance on risk levels.
  • The findings point out deficiencies in surveillance standards in China, suggesting that better understanding and mitigation strategies for transmission can enhance public health and safety in built environments.
