Insomnia during the COVID-19 pandemic: prevalence and correlates in a multi-ethnic population Singapore.

BMC Public Health

December 2024

Research Division, Institute of Mental Health, 10 Buangkok View, Buangkok Green, Medical Park, Singapore, 7539747, Singapore.

Background: Globally, the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic had a significant impact on mental health. Sudden lifestyle changes, threatening information received through various sources, fear of infection and other stressors led to sleep disturbances such as insomnia. The current study aimed to assess the prevalence of insomnia and its associated risk factors during the first wave of COVID-19 pandemic among Singapore residents.

Isolate Specific Transcriptome Changes Exerted by Isavuconazole Treatment in Candida auris.

Mycopathologia

December 2024

Department of Medical Microbiology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Debrecen, Nagyerdei Krt. 98., Debrecen, 4032, Hungary.

The sudden emergence of multidrug- and pan-resistant Candida auris isolates, combined with limited treatment options, poses significant global challenges in healthcare settings. Combination based therapies are promising alternative options to overcome C. auris related infections, where echinocandin and isavuconazole (ISA) combinations may be an interesting and promising approach.

Cardiovascular magnetic resonance in patients with mitral valve prolapse.

J Cardiovasc Magn Reson

December 2024

School of Biomedical Engineering and Imaging Sciences-Faculty of Life Sciences and Medicine, King's College London, London, UK.

With a prevalence of 2-3% in the general population, mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is the most common valvular heart disease. The clinical course is benign in the majority of patients, although severe mitral regurgitation, heart failure, and sudden cardiac death affect a non-negligible subset of patients. Imaging of MVP was confined to echocardiography until a few years ago when it became apparent that cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) could offer comparative advantages for detecting and quantifying mitral valve abnormalities alongside tissue myocardial characterization.

Effective methods for measuring sudden environmental changes are crucial for understanding how cities respond to shifts in human activity. This study examines atmospheric metal outputs during the COVID-19 restrictions using honey samples collected from three land use types in Brussels Capital Region (BCR), Belgium, and Metro Vancouver Regional District (MVRD), Canada to study changes as the result of restrictions. By comparing these cities with distinct sizes, ages, and structures, we assess how urban environments responded to pandemic-induced restrictions.

A cell's global physical state is characterized by its volume and dry mass. The ratio of cell mass to volume is the cell mass density (CMD), which is also a measure of macromolecular crowding and concentrations of all proteins. Using the Fluorescence eXclusion method (FXm) and Quantitative Phase Microscopy (QPM), we investigate CMD dynamics after exposure to sudden media osmolarity change.
