Objectives: Similarities between acute ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke make diagnosis and triage challenging. We studied a smartphone-based quantitative pupillometer for differentiation of acute ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke.

Materials And Methods: Stroke patients were recruited prior to surgical or interventional treatment.

Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a non-invasive and fast technology that has been increasingly used to analyse livestock diet quality. The objective of this study was to conduct a systematic review of the literature to examine the utilisation of NIRS technology for analysing livestock diet quality, with a focus on identifying trends, methodologies, and challenges in recent research. We conducted a systematic search of the literature on five electronic databases and retrieved 718 studies that have been published on the subject.

Article Synopsis
  • * By analyzing data from the Million Veteran Program and other cohorts, the study identifies 63 genetic loci linked to AMD, including 30 that were previously unknown, highlighting significant differences in risk among various ancestries.
  • * The findings reveal that certain genetic risk factors, like those found in the CFH locus, have varying effects based on ancestry, suggesting that targeted therapies could be developed by considering these genetic differences.

Smartphone pupillometry predicts ischemic penumbra in acute ischemic stroke.

J Stroke Cerebrovasc Dis

November 2024

Department of Neurological Surgery, University of Washington, Seattle, WA, USA; Departments of Radiology, Mechanical Engineering, and Stroke & Applied Neuroscience Center, University of Washington, Seattle, WA, USA. Electronic address:

Background: Recent advances in time-sensitive treatment methods for large vessel occlusion (LVO), including medical and mechanical thrombectomy, have increased the importance of rapid recognition of acute ischemic stroke. The pupillary light reflex (PLR) is a biomarker for neurological status. We studied a portable smartphone-based quantitative pupillometry application that has been developed to quantify PLR metrics without requiring external hardware or extensive training to operate.
