The operation of nuclear power plants generates large quantities of radioactive materials or waste, which need to be characterised before decommissioning or for final disposal in radioactive waste repositories. The nuclear operators in Slovakia must declare 19 critical radionuclides in all radioactive waste before storage in the regional waste repository. This article describes a simple and rapid method for the determination of one critical radionuclide, Se, in radioactive waste. The conditions for the effective distillation of selenium from various mixtures of HCl and HBr solutions were studied. The highest selenium recoveries were achieved in a mixture of 6.5 mol L HCl and 18.3 mol L HBr in 7:1 vol ratio. The method was applied for the determination of Se in radioactive concentrates and sludge samples from nuclear power plants in Slovakia. Se was measured with a TRI CARB 3100 TR liquid scintillation counter.

Nuclear power plant decommissioning requires the rapid and accurate classification of radioactive waste in narrow spaces and under time constraints. Photon-counting detector technology offers an effective solution for the quick classification and detection of radioactive hotspots in a decommissioning environment. This paper characterizes a 5 mm CdTe Timepix3 detector and evaluates its feasibility as a single-layer Compton camera.

This paper presents the results of microbial corrosion tests on M0-grade copper under conditions simulating a geological repository for radioactive waste at the Yeniseisky site (Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia). The work used a microbial community sampled from a depth of 450 m and stimulated with glucose, hydrogen and sulfate under anaerobic conditions. It was shown that the maximum corrosion rate, reaching 9.

Radiation-resistant bacteria are of great application potential in various fields, including bioindustry and bioremediation of radioactive waste. However, how radiation-resistant bacteria combat against invading phages is seldom addressed. Here, we present a series of crystal structures of a sensor and an effector of the cyclic oligonucleotide-based anti-phage signaling system (CBASS) from a radioresistant bacterium Deinococcus wulumuqiensis.

Mercury sequestration in alkaline salt low-level radioactive waste.

Environ Sci Pollut Res Int

January 2025

Savannah River National Laboratory, Aiken, SC, USA.

Liquid low-level radioactive waste at the Savannah River Site contains several species of mercury, including inorganic, elemental, and methylmercury. This waste is solidified and stabilized in a cementitious waste form referred to as saltstone. Soluble mercury is stabilized as β-cinnabar, HgS as the result of reaction between the mercury and sulfur present in blast furnace slag, one of the cementitious reagents.

Radioactivity concentration in soil was analyzed around the capital city of Indonesia, Jakarta along with the adjoining provinces of West Java and Banten, representing one of the most densely populated in Indonesia. Nestled within this area is a nuclear research reactor. The analysis of natural and artificial radioactivity concentrations using a HPGe gamma spectrometry to measure 226Ra, 232Th, 40K, and 137Cs in surface soil samples.
