Published: August 2019

Nanostructured spinel ferrites with formula MFe2O4 (where M ═ Fe, Co, Mn, Ni, Zn, etc.) represent a class of magnetic materials widely employed in different research fields, due to the possibility of finely tuning the magnetic properties by changing the chemical composition, size, shape, capping agents, etc. Herein, a review of the most common chemical synthesis in liquid media, distinguishing among aqueous and non-aqueous routes, is presented. The experimental procedure together with the mechanism, advantages and disadvantages, and examples are illustrated for each synthetic strategy.

Liquid Structure of Magnesium Aluminates.

Materials (Basel)

December 2024

Interfaces, Confinement, Matériaux et Nanostructures, 45071 Orléans Cedex 2, France.

Magnesium aluminates (MgO)(AlO) belong to a class of refractory materials with important applications in glass and glass-ceramic technologies. Typically, these materials are fabricated from high-temperature molten phases. However, due to the difficulties in making measurements at very high temperatures, information on liquid-state structure and properties is limited.

The realization of low thermal conductivity at high temperatures (0.11 W m K 800 °C) in ambient air in a porous solid thermal insulation material, using stable packed nanoparticles of high-entropy spinel oxide with 8 cations (HESO-8 NPs) with a relatively high packing density of ≈50%, is reported. The high-density HESO-8 NP pellets possess around 1000-fold lower thermal diffusivity than that of air, resulting in much slower heat propagation when subjected to a transient heat flux.

Structural, Magnetic, and Dielectric Properties of Laser-Ablated CoFeO/BaTiO Bilayers Deposited over Highly Doped Si(100).

Materials (Basel)

November 2024

Center of Physics of Minho and Porto Universities (CF-UM-UP), Laboratory for Materials and Emergent Technologies (LaPMET), Departamento de Física, Universidade do Minho, Campus de Gualtar, 4710-057 Braga, Portugal.

Laser ablation was used to successfully fabricate multiferroic bilayer thin films, composed of BaTiO (BTO) and CoFeO (CFO), on highly doped (100) Si substrates. This study investigates the influence of BaTiO layer thickness (50-220 nm) on the films' structural, magnetic, and dielectric properties. The dense, polycrystalline films exhibited a tetragonal BaTiO phase and a cubic spinel CoFeO layer.

November 2024

Section of Chemistry for the Technology (ChemTech), Department of Industrial Engineering, University of Padova, Via Marzolo 9, Padova, 35131, Italy.

Article Synopsis
  • Spinel-structured transition metal oxides are emerging as eco-friendly alternatives to platinum in electrocatalysis, particularly high-entropy oxides (HEOs) which enhance catalyst reactivity through multiple TM-cation sites.
  • The study focuses on electrospun (CrMnFeCoNi)O nanofibers, examining how different calcination temperatures and durations affect their morphology and electrocatalytic performance, with optimal results seen at 400 °C for 2 hours.
  • Advanced analytical techniques, including broadband electric spectroscopy, reveal that oxygen vacancies and the structure of metal coordination octahedra are critical to the electrocatalytic efficiency of these nanofibers.
