In this paper, micro-Raman mapping and conductive atomic force microscopy (C-AFM) were jointly applied to investigate the structural and electrical homogeneity of quasi-free-standing monolayer graphene (QFMLG), obtained by high temperature decomposition of 4H-SiC(0001) followed by hydrogen intercalation at 900 °C. Strain and doping maps, obtained by Raman data, showed the presence of sub-micron patches with reduced hole density correlated to regions with higher compressive strain, probably associated with a locally reduced hydrogen intercalation. Nanoscale resolution electrical maps by C-AFM also revealed the presence of patches with enhanced current injection through the QFMLG/SiC interface, indicating a locally reduced Schottky barrier height (Φ). The Φ values evaluated from local I-V curves by the thermionic emission model were in good agreement with the values calculated for the QFMLG/SiC interface using the Schottky-Mott rule and the graphene holes density from Raman maps. The demonstrated approach revealed a useful and non-invasive method to probe the structural and electrical homogeneity of QFMLG for future nano-electronics applications.

Electrochemical water splitting is a promising method for the generation of "green hydrogen", a renewable and sustainable energy source. However, the complex, multistep synthesis processes, often involving hazardous or expensive chemicals, limit its broader adoption. Herein, a nitrate (NO) anion-intercalated nickel-iron-cerium mixed-metal (oxy)hydroxide heterostructure electrocatalyst is fabricated on nickel foam (NiFeCeOH@NF) via a simple electrodeposition method followed by cyclic voltammetry activation to enhance its surface properties.

Coherent phase transformations in interstitial solid solutions or intercalation compounds with a miscibility gap are of practical relevance for energy storage materials and specifically for metal hydride or lithium-ion compound nanoparticles. Different conclusions on the size-dependence of the transformation conditions are reached by modeling or theory focusing on the impact of either one (internal, solid-state-) critical-point wetting of the nanoparticle surface or coherency constraints from solute-saturated surface layers. We report a hybrid numerical approach, combining atomistic grand canonical Monte Carlo simulation with a continuum mechanics analysis of coherency stress and modeling simultaneously wetting and mechanical constraints.

Steroids are organic compounds found in all forms of biological life. Besides their structural roles in cell membranes, steroids act as signalling molecules in various physiological processes and are used to treat inflammatory conditions. It has been hypothesised that in addition to their well-characterised genomic and non-genomic pathways, steroids exert their biological or pharmacological activities an indirect, nonreceptor-mediated membrane mechanism caused by steroid-induced changes to the physicochemical properties of cell membranes.

Anti-gene oligonucleotides belong to a group of therapeutic compounds, which, in contrast to antisense oligonucleotides, bind to DNA. Clamp anti-gene oligonucleotides bind through a double-stranded invasion mechanism. With two arms connected by a linker, they hybridize to one of the DNA strands forming Watson-Crick and Hoogsteen hydrogen bonds.

Understanding the interactions between small molecules and calf thymus deoxyribonucleic acid (ctDNA) is critical for certain aspects of drug discovery. In this study, three 11H-indeno[1,2-b]quinoxalin-11-one thiosemicarbazones were synthesized and their interaction with ctDNA was examined through various spectroscopic techniques, including ultraviolet (UV) spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, and circular dichroism (CD) spectrum, and through physicochemical methods, including viscosity measurements. In addition, the effects of these thiosemicarbazone compounds 4a, 4b and 4c on several cancer cell lines were explored.
