In past decades, fluorine exposure of plants and human caused by regional geochemical anomalies of fluorine or environmental pollution has received widespread concerns. Many in-depth researches have been conducted on the geochemical behavior of fluorine in different environmental media, but with disputes and uncertainties. We reviewed the research advances on geochemical behaviors of fluorine in the atmosphere, water and soil, including source, quantity, existence form, migration, transformation, and controlling factors. The observation of correlation between geochemical behaviors of fluorine and plant and human fluoride exposure was also reviewed. Moreover, we proposed that the future research on environmental geochemical behaviors of fluorine should give priority to particular directions.

Historical record of trace elements since MIS 2 in a sediment core of Laizhou Bay, China.

Environ Monit Assess

January 2025

Sinopec Offshore Oilfield Services Company, Shanghai, 201208, China.

The concentration of trace elements in sediments is a critical element in the quality of nearshore environments. Geochemical background values are the normal concentrations of trace elements in the natural environment, and the use of different background values has resulted in different evaluations. Trace element (Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Cd, As, and Hg) concentration profiles along a sediment core were investigated to obtain background values and to assess the depositional processes and contamination levels in Laizhou Bay.

The content of 39 metals and metalloids (MMs) in submicron road dust (PM fraction) was studied in the traffic zone, residential courtyards with parking lots, and on pedestrian roads in parks in Moscow. The geochemical profiles of PM vary slightly between different types of roads and courtyards but differ significantly from those in parks. In Moscow, compared to other cities worldwide, submicron road dust contains less As, Sb, Mo, Cr, Cd, Sn, Tl, Ca, Rb, La, Y, U, but more Cu, Zn, Co, Fe, Mn, Ti, Zr, Al, V.

Naturally widespread ferrihydrite is unstable and often coexists with complex ions, such as the heavy metal ion Pb(II). Ferrihydrite could fix Pb(II) by precipitation and hydroxyl adsorption, but release Pb(II) with mineral aging. Gallic acid plays an important role in influencing the geochemical behavior of ferrihydrite-Pb, and anoxia is one of the factors influencing the transformation of mineral.

Selenium (Se) is an essential element for humans, playing a critical role in the functioning of the immune system. The global prevalence of dietary Se deficiency is a significant public health concern, largely attributed to the low levels of Se present in crops. The sufficient Se in plants and humans is determined by the presence of stable Se sources in the soil.

The present study aimed to investigate the hydrogeochemical patterns and contamination of the radiogeology, especially radon activity, related to geothermal aquifer properties and to perform a risk assessment of annual effective doses covering all hydrothermal spring attractions in Southern Thailand. Radon is an established lung carcinogen; especially longer term exposure to radioactive radon through inhalation could be a cause of lung cancer risk. Altogether 22 hydrothermal spring samples were collected from the six hydrothermal provinces in Southern Thailand in early November of 2023.
