The aim of this study was to evaluate the possible therapeutic or protective effects of lycopene on diethylnitrosamine (DEN)-induced testicular lipid peroxidation and on the associated changes in spermatological parameters and histopathological architecture of rat testis. DEN is a carcinogenic substance that can be derived from chemicals used in agriculture, such as insecticides and nitrate. The rats were assigned to control, lycopene, DEN(1), DEN(2), lycopene + DEN(1), lycopene + DEN(2), DEN(1) + lycopene and DEN(2) + lycopene groups. During the study, lycopene was administered by oral gavage at a dose of 10 mg kg  bw every other day for 10 days and DEN was administered at a dose of 200 mg  kg  bw as a single dose intraperitoneally. DEN was applied for 30 days in group DEN(1) and for 90 days in group DEN(2). Malondialdehyde (MDA) and reduced glutathione (GSH) levels, antioxidant enzymes activities, spermatological parameters, the weight of the reproductive organs (v. seminalis, prostate, testis and epididymis) and the histopathological structure were determined. MDA levels significantly increased, while GSH and antioxidant enzymes' activities decreased in DEN groups (p < 0.001). There was an increase in the rate of abnormal spermatozoa and a decrease in sperm density and motility, and reproductive organ weight (the weight of the right and left testis) in both DEN groups. Lycopene has normalised biochemical and spermatological parameters and reproductive organ weight. The histopathological examination of testicular tissue showed that the most significant histopathological change in DEN groups was the seminiferous tubule dilatation. These results suggest that besides the protective effects, the therapeutic effect of lycopene is possibly due to its antioxidant effects on DEN-induced testicular toxicity.

The objective of this study was to examine the impact of freeze-thawing on the levels of oxidative stress, fatty acids, vitamins A, D, E, and K, cholesterol, and amino acids, as well as on spermatological parameters, in ram semen. Semen was collected and pooled from each of the seven rams twice a week for three weeks. The mixed semen was diluted with tris + egg yolk diluent at 38 °C (Group 38 °C) and the temperature was reduced to 5 °C (Group 5 °C).

Department of Reproduction and Artificial Insemination, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Ondokuz Mayis, Samsun, Turkey.

Sperm cryopreservation is a rather complex process that needs to be adapted to wild and domestic bird species to ensure adequate efficiency. This study aimed to determine the usability of different cryoprotectants in the cryopreservation of Gloster canary sperm. For this purpose, sperm samples were collected from 12 2-year-old male Gloster canaries three times a week using cloacal massage for 4 weeks.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on the cryopreservation of testicular tissue and sperm in bulls, examining how these processes impact sperm quality and cell viability, as well as the expression of the PARP-1 gene.
  • Testes were collected from 20 bulls, and sperm was frozen using liquid nitrogen, with testicular tissue treated with cryoprotectants like DMSO and EG before freezing.
  • Results showed that post-thaw sperm motility and viability significantly decreased, with DMSO improving cell viability more than EG, and both cryoprotectants influenced gene expression related to DNA repair.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explored how hesperidin (HES) impacts testicular health in rats exposed to glyphosate (GLP), assessing histopathological and biochemical changes as well as semen characteristics.
  • Rats were divided into four groups: one without GLP or HES (control), one with HES, one with GLP, and one with both GLP and HES.
  • Results indicated that GLP negatively affected sperm quality and testicular tissue, while HES counteracted these effects, improving sperm parameters, antioxidant levels, and reducing oxidative damage.

Department of Reproduction and Artificial Insemination, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Ataturk University, Erzurum, Turkey.

Background: Various antioxidant substances are added to sperm extenders to protect spermatozoa against oxidative stress and cryodamage.

Objective: To investigate the effects of the flavonoid diosmin (DIO) and a flavanone glycoside naringin (NAR) on the freezability of ram semen.

Materials And Methods: In this study, six Merino rams were used during the breeding season.
