Sticky Business: a syndrome of mucoid bacterial spread.

BMJ Case Rep

Division of Infectious Diseases, California Pacific Medical Center, San Francisco, California, USA.

Published: March 2019

A 70-year-old man presented with acute wrist pain concerning for septic arthritis. Shortly thereafter, he developed acute monocular vision loss and was diagnosed with endogenous endophthalmitis. Subsequent imaging revealed numerous visceral abscesses and a mycotic abdominal aortic aneurysm. Cultures, in conjunction with the clinical syndrome, were strongly suggestive of hypervirulent syndrome (hvKP). hvKP syndrome may present with multiple sites of infection or subsequent metastatic spread may develop; the liver, lungs, central nervous system and eye are most commonly involved. Prompt source control and intravenous antibiotic therapy leads to a cure in the majority of patients. This case highlights the risk factors, presentation, management and prognosis of this disease as well as its increasing incidence in North America and Europe.

This study delves into the complex domain of enterprise finance to explore the relationship between cost stickiness and enterprise risks, with a particular emphasis on the role of absorbed slack. Our analysis is based on a comprehensive examination of 3,177 Chinese listed enterprises over a period of ten years, from 2007 to 2022. The findings reveal that cost stickiness is a widespread phenomenon among Chinese listed enterprises, exhibiting variation across different industries.

The sticky business of Alphavirus capsid-host interactions.

Trends Microbiol

December 2024

Department of Cell Biology, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, NY, USA. Electronic address:

Alphaviruses are a serious threat to global health and can cause lethal encephalitic or arthritogenic disease in humans and animals. As there are no licensed antivirals, it is critical to improve our understanding of alphavirus interactions with the host cell. Here, we focus on the essential alphavirus protein capsid.

Sticky Business: Correlating Oligomeric Features of Class B Scavenger Receptors to Lipid Transport.

Curr Atheroscler Rep

December 2024

Department of Biochemistry, Medical College of Wisconsin, 8701 Watertown Plank Road, Milwaukee, WI, 53226, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • - The review focuses on Class B scavenger receptors, which are important for lipid transport and regulation, and their role in the formation of atherosclerotic plaques due to lipid imbalances and immune responses.
  • - Recent findings suggest that these receptors can form oligomers, and the review discusses specific residues and motifs that facilitate this oligomerization along with studies linking it to receptor function.
  • - Two main hypotheses are proposed: one suggests that oligomerization creates a hydrophobic channel for enhanced lipid transport, while the other posits that it stabilizes the receptors and prevents their internalization, thereby supporting their transport function indirectly.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the effect of konjac glucomannan (KGM) on the taste quality of rice porridge, finding that adding 1% KGM significantly improves its characteristics.
  • - Results showed that KGM enhanced the porridge's texture by reducing water absorption and increasing hardness while also improving water-holding capacity.
  • - Sensory evaluations confirmed that KGM enriched the aroma and overall palatability of the rice porridge, suggesting its potential in enhancing commercial production.

: Older adults in residential aged care facilities (RACFs) experience disproportionate levels of poor oral health relative to other groups in the general population, affecting their physical and mental wellbeing. The Oral Health Assessment Tool (OHAT) is a validated and widely used dental assessment tool; however, recent systematic reviews have identified shortcomings with respect to its measurement properties. : The objective of this protocol is to provide a detailed overview of a multidisciplinary qualitative study that aims to (a) co-design and develop a modified OHAT for RACFs and (b) inform the development of an OHAT training package and implementation strategies.
