Anti-doping analytes in serum: A comparison of SST and SST-II Advance blood collection tubes.

Drug Test Anal

Sports Medicine Research and Testing Laboratory, Salt Lake City, UT, USA.

Published: July 2019

Serum insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), procollagen type III N-terminal peptide (PIIINP), and human growth hormone (hGH) isoforms were analyzed in identical serum samples collected into BD Vacutainer SST and BD Vacutainer SST-II Advance serum separator tubes. Comparing the serum collected into each tube, measurement correlation was high (R  > 0.83) and percent bias was minimal (<|3.2%|) for all analytes measured using World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA)-approved tests. As such, it is recommended that both SST and SST-II Advance tubes can be used interchangeably for anti-doping purposes.

Fibrin clot interference in a human chorionic gonadotrophin assay causing a false Down syndrome screening result.

Biochem Med (Zagreb)

February 2023

Department of Clinical Biochemistry, Training and Research Hospital, Usak University, Usak, Turkey.

Serum samples are generally used for the measurement of human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) to calculate second-trimester maternal screening results. Lower hCG concentrations correlate with a lower calculated risk of Down syndrome (DS). Hence, erroneously low hCG results due to fibrin clot may lead to misinterpretation.

Background: We aimed to compare the Sarstedt S-Monovette serum gel tube and the BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company) Serum Separator Tube II (SST II) Advance based on technical specifications and tests results.

Methods: One hundred and twenty volunteers were included in the technical evaluation and 42 of 120 volunteers in the clinical evaluation. Blood was collected into S-Monovette, and SST II.

Background: Drugs may potentially adsorb to blood collection tubes containing gel separators in the preanalytical phase of therapeutic drug monitoring. The aim of this study was to compare measured concentrations of 28 psychoactive drugs and 13 metabolites in spiked serum samples stored on standard (plain) tubes versus barrier gel tubes during a 2-6-day period at room temperature.

Methods: Drug-free ("blank") serum samples spiked with mixes of antidepressants, antipsychotics, or mood stabilizers (valproic acid and lamotrigine), including relevant metabolites, were transferred to tubes with and without gel, that is, BD Vacutainer SST II Advance gel tubes and BD Vacutainer Glass Serum Tubes (Becton-Dickinson Company, Plymouth, United Kingdom).

Background: Selection and verification of blood collection tubes is an important preanalytical issue in clinical laboratories. Today, gel tubes are commonly used with many advantages, although they are known to cause interference in immunoassay methods. In this study, we aimed to compare SSTs of two different suppliers (Ayset clot activator & Gel and Becton Dickinson (BD) Vacutainer SST II advance) with reference tubes and evaluate the effect of storage time in terms of commonly used endocrine tests such as thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free thyroxine (fT4), and free triiodothyronine (fT3).
