Experimental Observation of Crystal-Liquid Coexistence in Slit-Confined Nonpolar Fluids.

Films of carbon tetrachloride (CCl) confined in slit geometry between two flat diamond substrates down to a few tens of Angstroms are studied by combining X-ray reflectivity with in-plane and out-of-plane X-ray scattering. The confined films form a heterogeneous structure with coexisting regions of liquid and crystalline phases. The liquid phase shows short-range ordering normal to the surfaces of the substrates. The experiments directly show the ability of the confinement to induce crystal objects, which is a long-discussed issue in the literature. The surface structure and morphology of the substrates may influence the actual realization of the crystalline phase in confinement.

Migrasomes, the vesicle-like membrane micro-structures, arise on the retraction fibers (RFs), the branched nano-tubules pulled out of cell plasma membranes during cell migration and shaped by membrane tension. Migrasomes form in two steps: a local RF bulging is followed by a protein-dependent stabilization of the emerging spherical bulge. Here we addressed theoretically and experimentally the previously unexplored mechanism of bulging of membrane tubular systems.

Background: Prevention of iron deficiency in suckling piglets by intramuscular injection of a standardized amount of iron dextran or gleptoferron in the first days of life can lead to over- or underdosage with respective health risks. Currently, combined iron products containing an active substance against coccidia are also used on farms. When using a combination product targeting two diseases, an adjustment of the necessary amount of iron to prevent anaemia in the frame of a farm-specific treatment protocol is not possible.

The knowledge of diffusion mechanisms in materials is crucial for predicting their high-temperature performance and stability, yet accurately capturing the underlying physics like thermal effects remains challenging. In particular, the origin of the experimentally observed non-Arrhenius diffusion behavior has remained elusive, largely due to the lack of effective computational tools. Here we propose an efficient ab initio framework to compute the Gibbs energy of the transition state in vacancy-mediated diffusion including the relevant thermal excitations at the density-functional-theory level.
