Background: The Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, third edition (Bayley-III) are widely used to assess the development of children born preterm. However, it is still unclear whether US norms are adequate for use in other populations. In 2014, the German version of the Bayley-III with German norms was published.
Objectives: We aimed to compare the performance of very-preterm infants at one, two, and three years of age using the German versus US norms of the Bayley-III.
Methods: All children born prior to 32 weeks of gestational age during 2012 and 2015 and taking part in the follow-up program of the Medical University of Vienna were assessed and scored according to both German and US norms by two expert clinical psychologists at the age of one, two, and three years of age.
Results: In total, 843 tests were obtained from 450 children. When looking at scaled scores for cognitive, language, and motor outcomes, preterm children achieved significantly lower scores in nearly all subtests with the German as compared to the US norms. In addition, the proportion of impaired children scoring < 1 standard deviation (SD) and < 2 SD below the norm was significantly higher in nearly all subtests when using the German compared to the US norms (p < 0.05).
Conclusions: Applying German and US norms of the Bayley-III leads to different outcomes in very-preterm children, and these differences are statistically significant and clinically relevant. Thus, comparisons of outcomes of very-preterm children using culturally specific norms are problematic, and these findings have to be considered.

In the German Democratic Republic (GDR), a tightly organised vaccination system was established in the 1950s and 1960s. In this context, the medical effort to stop the spread of infectious diseases in the post-war period was coupled with the political will to present itself as a responsible preventive state. Based on unpublished archival material, we will shed light on the everyday practice of vaccination in the early GDR.

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a clinically well-established, evidence-based procedure for the treatment of particularly severe or treatment-resistant psychiatric and neuropsychiatric disorders. A considerable number of patients who require ECT are unable to provide informed consent due to their medical condition. Both international and national studies show that restrictive laws and legal rulings can hinder or even prevent the use of ECT in patients lacking the capacity to provide informed consent or in cases of nonvoluntary treatment (coercive treatment).

Several philosophers of science have taken inspiration from biological research on niches to conceptualise scientific practice. We systematise and extend three niche-based theories of scientific practice: conceptual ecology, cognitive niche construction, and scientific niche construction. We argue that research niches are a promising conceptual tool for understanding complex and dynamic research environments, which helps to investigate relevant forms of agency and material and social interdependencies, while also highlighting their historical and dynamic nature.

This article explores the representation of dementia and queer relationships in the prizewinning film Dicke Mädchen (2011), which is part of German alternative cinema. It examines the various interplays, reciprocal disturbances, and intersections between age, gender and the intertwinement of female dementia and male queerness in order to illustrate how this link blurs traditional categories based on binaries and fosters the emergence of queer desires. Simultaneously, the film visually and narratively reminds its characters of the societal norms surrounding them and thus reinforces heteronormative structures, which, for the male protagonists, make a lasting queer romance impossible.

Background: The availability of deep brain stimulation (DBS), a highly efficacious treatment for several movement disorders, remains low in developing countries, with scarce data available on utilization and outcomes.
Objective: We characterized the DBS cohort and outcomes at a Malaysian quaternary medical center.
Methods: A retrospective chart review was done on DBS-related surgery at the University of Malaya, including clinico-demographic, genetics, and outcomes data focusing on post-operative medication reduction and complications.
