Aim: Fructose and sorbitol are utilized as biomarkers for nonalcoholic steatohepatitis. Measurement of fructose and sorbitol levels helps understanding disease progression, drug response and underlying mechanism.
Materials & Methods: Stable isotope-labeled fructose and sorbitol were used as surrogate standards and internal standards. Human plasma samples were processed and analyzed by ultra performance LC-MS/MS via chromatographic separation on a hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography analytical column without derivatization. Assay was validated with biomarker fit-for-purpose concept.
Results: A 12-min ultra performance LC-MS/MS method was developed and validated to directly measure fructose and sorbitol in human plasma with acceptable intra- and inter-assay precision and accuracy.
Conclusion: This sensitive, selective, and high-throughput assay with suitable dynamic ranges was successfully applied to clinical studies to provide reliable fructose and sorbitol biomarker data.

Ninety-nine percent of alpha-synuclein (α-syn) in the human body is distributed in erythrocytes. However, the role that α-syn plays in erythropoiesis remains unclear. To determine the effect of α-syn on erythroid differentiation, the erythroid cells, derived from human CD34+ progenitors in the umbilical cord, were cultured in a system composed of a series of cytokines and harvested after 6 days.

Melatonin (MT) can improve plant resistance and fruit quality. The mechanism by which MT affects soluble sugar and organic acids accumulation in drupe fruits is not clear. In this study, 100 µmol/L MT was sprayed on the leaves of plum trees at the second stage of rapid fruit expansion (90 and 97 d after flowering), and the effects of MT on plum fruit quality and its effects on the soluble sugar-organic acid metabolism were investigated.

Carbohydrate metabolism plays an essential role in mediating quality and ripening of postharvest fruit. Previous work has demonstrated the regulatory role of methyl jasmonate (MeJA) in ripening of apple fruit. However, the role of MeJA in mediating carbohydrate metabolism of ripening apple fruit is unexplored.

The aim of this study was to explore the effect of periodical negative air ions (NAI) on the quality of 'Fuji' apple fruit after treatment at 0, 30, 60, and 90 min every 4 weeks. NAI for 60 min decreased weight loss, mitigated decay, and maintained hardness of the apple fruit during the 40 weeks of storage. Treatment of fruits with NAI for 60 min enhanced the apple defense ability against pathogens by maintaining the cell wall integrity and improving the related-enzyme activities as well as accumulation of total phenols and flavonoids.
