Background: The roles of Aβ in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer 's disease (AD) include disruption of synaptic communication/function and synaptic plasticity mechanisms thought to underlie learning and memory. Exactly how these abnormal processes arise is incompletely understood, but evidence suggests that dysregulation of intracellular Ca levels is involved in alterations of neuronal excitability, synaptic remodeling, and neurodegeneration in AD. Our lab has focused on the potential involvement of voltage-gated potassium channels (VGKCs) in these processes, particularly Kv1.

CREG1 attenuates intervertebral disc degeneration by alleviating nucleus pulposus cell pyroptosis via the PINK1/Parkin-related mitophagy pathway.

Intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) is a chronic degenerative disease with a complex pathophysiological mechanism. Increasing evidence suggests that the NOD-like receptor thermal protein domain associated protein 3 (NLRP3)-mediated pyroptosis of nucleus pulposus cells (NPCs) plays a crucial role in the pathological progression of IVDD. Pyroptosis is a novel form of programmed cell death characterized by the formation of plasma membrane pores by gasdermin family proteins, leading to cell swelling, membrane rupture, and the release of inflammatory cytokines, which trigger an inflammatory response.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores how cyclosporine A (CsA) affects paclitaxel-resistant prostate cancer cells, revealing that CsA enhances the effectiveness of paclitaxel.
  • CsA treatment lowers the expression of metadherin (MTDH), a protein linked to paclitaxel resistance, indicating that targeting MTDH could be a potential strategy for overcoming this resistance.
  • In both lab experiments and mouse models, the findings suggest combining CsA with paclitaxel could improve treatment outcomes for prostate cancer.

Invasive fungal infections are a leading cause of death worldwide. Translating molecular insights into clinical benefits is challenging because fungal pathogens and their hosts share similar eukaryotic physiology. Consequently, current antifungal treatments have limited efficacy, may be poorly fungicidal in the host, can exhibit toxicity, and are increasingly compromised by emerging resistance.

Immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN) is the most common primary glomerulonephritis worldwide with heterogeneous histopathological phenotypes. Although IgAN with membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN)-like features has been reported in children and adults, treatment strategies for this rare IgAN subtype have not been established. Here, we present the case of a 56-year-old man with no history of kidney disease who initially presented with nephrotic syndrome.
