Previous studies proposed a smart lighting system that can detect object colors and emit spectrally optimized lighting to reduce the light absorbed by surfaces. The spatial resolution of an absorption-minimization light projection system is investigated using images of various visual complexity. Participants with normal color vision and good visual acuity judged the visual clarity of low, medium, and high complexity images by using a mean opinion score (MOS) scale. Results from the visual assessments show that blur acceptability of illuminated images significantly reduces when the circle of confusion (CoC) is increased by 3%. Blur perception also changes with visual complexity.

It is essential in combat sports such as boxing for athletes to perceive the relevant visual information that enables them to anticipate and respond to their opponent's attacking and defensive moves. Here, we used virtual reality (VR), which enables standardization and reproducibility while maintaining perception-action coupling, to assess the influence of a gaze-contingent blur on the visual processes that underpin these boxing behaviours. Eleven elite French boxers were placed in an immersive and adaptive first-person VR environment where they had to avoid by dodging one or two punches, and then counterattack to strike their opponent.

A critical goal of vision is to detect changes in light intensity, even when these changes are blurred by the spatial resolution of the eye and the motion of the animal. Here, we describe a recurrent neural circuit in Drosophila that compensates for blur and thereby selectively enhances the perceived contrast of moving edges. Using in vivo, two-photon voltage imaging, we measured the temporal response properties of L1 and L2, two cell types that receive direct synaptic input from photoreceptors.

The beauty or ugliness of a face is affected by factors such as the resolution of the face image presented on the screen and its exposure duration. The present study investigated the effects of image resolution and exposure duration on the beauty and ugliness evaluations of face images processed with down-sampling and Gaussian blurring. We prepared two types of face images with these blur processing treatments and conducted two experiments to evaluate beauty and ugliness perceptions at various exposure durations.
