We address the long-standing problem of anomalous growth observed in the terahertz (THz) energy yield from air plasmas created by two-color laser pulses, as the fundamental wavelength λ is increased. Using two distinct optical parametric amplifiers (OPAs), we report THz energies scaling like λ0α with large exponents 5.6≤α≤14.3, which departs from the growth in λ02 expected from photocurrent theory. By means of comprehensive 3D simulations, we demonstrate that the changes in the laser beam size, pulse duration, and phase-matching conditions in the second-harmonic generation process when tuning the OPA's carrier wavelength can lead to these high scaling powers. The value of the phase angle between the two colors reached at the exit of the doubling crystal turns out to be crucial and even explains non-monotonic behaviors in the measurements.

Background: Identifying the underlying mechanisms of immune checkpoint inhibitor resistance in patients with cachexia is a current challenge. Ghrelin is a peptide hormone that plays an important role in the metabolism of patients with cancer cachexia. Despite the importance of ghrelin in cancer cachexia, most previous studies on the subject have not distinguished between the forms of ghrelin.

Pregnancy is a vulnerable time with significant cardiovascular changes that can lead to adverse outcomes, which can extend into the postpartum window. Exposure to emissions from electronic cigarettes (Ecig), commonly known as "vaping," has an adverse impact on cardiovascular function during pregnancy and post-natal life of offspring, but the postpartum effects on maternal health are poorly understood. We used a Sprague Dawley rat model, where pregnant dams are exposed to Ecigs between gestational day (GD)2-GD21 to examine postpartum consequences.

: Pulmonary exposure to emissions from manipulating solid surface composite (SSC) materials has been associated with adverse health effects in humans and laboratory animals. Previous and investigations of SSC toxicity have been limited by particle delivery methods that do not fully recapitulate the workplace environment. This study sought to determine the acute SSC-induced pulmonary responses whole-body inhalation exposure.

The plasma membrane and the underlying skeleton form a protective barrier for eukaryotic cells. The molecular players forming this complex composite material constantly rearrange under mechanical stress. One of those molecules, spectrin, is ubiquitous in the membrane skeleton and linked by short actin filaments.

Immune cells express a variety of ion channels and transporters in the plasma membrane and intracellular organelles, responsible of the transference of charged ions across hydrophobic lipid membrane barriers. The correct regulation of ion transport ensures proper immune cell function, activation, proliferation, and cell death. Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disease in which the Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Conductance Regulator (CFTR) chloride channel gene is defective, consequently, the CFTR protein is dysfunctional, and the chloride efflux in CF cells is markedly impaired.
