Experimental visual acuity (VA) of eight subjects was measured using the Freiburg vision test in a custom-made adaptive optics system. Measurements were conducted under one control and five defocus-induced conditions. In the defocus-induced conditions, 1 diopter of myopic defocus was added to the system using the Badal stage, and defocus vibrations with five different levels of amplitude were generated by a deformable mirror at 50 Hz. Computational simulations of the visual Strehl ratio (VSOTF) were performed using average aberrations of each subject recorded in the control condition. For the first time, to the best of our knowledge, it has been shown experimentally that both the simulated VSOTF and experimentally measured VA improve when defocus vibrations are added to a defocused eye.

In the deep-sea environment, the volume available for an in-situ gene sequencer is severely limited. In addition, optical imaging systems are subject to real-time, large-scale defocusing problems caused by ambient temperature fluctuations and vibrational perturbations. To address these challenges, we propose an edge detection algorithm for defocused images based on grayscale gradients and establish a defocus state detection model with nanometer resolution capabilities by relying on the inherent critical illumination light field.

Clinical identification and fundamental study of viruses rely on the detection of viral proteins or viral nucleic acids. Yet, amplification-based and antigen-based methods are not able to provide precise compositional information of individual virions due to small particle size and low-abundance chemical contents (e.g.

The measurement range of the widely adopted traditional interferometric method is limited by the length of the precision linear guide rail carrying the measured surface from the cat's eye to the confocal position, and the test result is vulnerable to airflow and vibration in the test environment. An interferometric method is proposed for the radius measurement of spherical surfaces based on a small axial moving distance and the corresponding defocus wavefront to eliminate the dependence on a long guide rail and extend the measuring range.

Next-generation advanced nuclear reactors based on molten salts are interested to apply machine learning (ML) technology to minimize human error and realize effective autonomous operation. Owing to harsh environments with limited access to molten salts, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has been investigated as a possible option for remote online monitoring. However, the height of molten salts is easily fluctuated by vibration.
