Spent coffee grounds (SCG) are a potentially valuable source of lipids for sustainable production of biofuels. However, there are several feedstock properties and solvent extraction parameters that can impact on the oil yield and quality, potentially reducing the possible environmental benefits of deriving oils from this waste stream. This study presents results of laboratory and pilot plant scale experimental investigations into lipid recovery from spent coffee, determining the effects of solvent extraction variables including duration, SCG-to-solvent ratio and SCG residual moisture. SCG samples from both the industrial production of instant coffee and retail coffee shops were characterized in terms of moisture content, particle size distribution and oil content to identify the impact of these variables on the efficiency of lipid recovery by solvent extraction. The dry weight oil content of the instant SCG samples ranged from 24.2 to 30.4% w/w, while the retail SCG samples contained considerably lower amounts of lipids with their oil content ranging between 13.4 and 14.8% w/w. The highest oil yields were found at an extraction duration of 8 h, while a moisture content of ~2% w/w led to increased yields relative to completely dry samples. A pattern of increasing acidity with decreasing extraction duration was observed, suggesting preferential extraction of free fatty acids (FFA), with the fatty acid (FA) profile of the oil found to be similar to lipids commonly utilized for biofuel production.

This investigation delves into the extraction of polyphenols from the flowers of Tabebuia rosea using a basic maceration approach with acetone, ethanol, and methanol as solvents. The spectroscopic analysis of the dye obtained confirms the existence of functional groups in the polyphenol extract. The study also explores optoelectronic, fluorescence, and photometric characteristics associated with polyphenols.

Tea saponin has garnered tremendous interest for its potential use in surfactant and drug synthesis. This research was designed to develop a technique based on pH-responsive switchable deep eutectic solvents (SDESs) for extracting tea saponins from Camellia oleifera seed meal. SDES synthesized from hexanoic acid and triethanolamine (1:1 molar ratio) offered the optimum extractive performance and the optimal conditions were obtained through single-factor experiments: 30 wt% water content in SDES, solid-liquid ratio of 1:30 g/mL, 60°C extraction temperature, 30 min extraction time, and acid volume of 1500 µL.

This study investigated the effects of different protein sources on feed intake, nutrient, and energy utilization, growth performance, and enteric methane (CH4) emissions in growing beef cattle, also evaluated against a pasture-based diet. Thirty-two Holstein × Angus growing beef were allocated to four dietary treatments: a total mixed ration (TMR) including solvent-extracted soybean meal as the main protein source (SB; n = 8), TMR with local brewers' spent grains (BSG; n = 8), TMR with local field beans (BNS; n = 8), and a diet consisting solely of fresh-cut Italian ryegrass (GRA; n = 8). Every four weeks, animals were moved to digestibility stalls within respiration chambers to measure nutrient intakes, energy and nitrogen (N) utilization, and enteric CH4 emissions.

In the present study, metal-organic frameworks, MIL-101(Fe) and MIL-53(Al), were synthesized under solvothermal conditions and were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray energy diffraction spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The synthesized metal-organic frameworks were utilized for the purpose of dispersive micro-solid phase extraction of sorafenib in both human plasma and wastewater, which was subsequently followed by high performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet determination. Parameters affecting extraction efficacy including adsorbent amount, ionic strength, pH, type of elution solvent, adsorption and desorption time were optimized.

Highly sensitive spectrofluorimetric methods were developed for the quantitative estimation of formoterol fumarate dihydrate (FFD) and fluticasone propionate (FP) in both authentic raw materials and marketed dosage forms using a micellar-enhanced spectrofluorimetric approach. The proposed methods are based on the determination of FP in the presence of FFD using the first derivative emission spectrofluorimetry. The peak amplitude of the emission spectra of the formed micellar fluorescence was measured at 465 nm after excitation at 236 nm (λ max of FP).
