Horses have a high prevalence of resting arrhythmias, cardiac murmurs, and valvular regurgitation, and training can increase the prevalence. This makes it challenging for equine veterinarians who are asked to evaluate horses for poor performance to determine the clinical relevance of some findings. In addition, cardiac disease has the potential to cause collapse or sudden death, putting both the horse and rider at risk. Further diagnostics, such as echocardiograms and resting and exercising ECGs can help to sort out the impact of an abnormality found on resting physical examination. However uncertainty over the importance of some findings continues to exist.

Human liver cell-based assays for the prediction of hepatic bile acid efflux transporter inhibition by drugs.

Expert Opin Drug Metab Toxicol

January 2025

Institut de R&D Servier, Paris-Saclay, F-91190 Gif-sur-Yvette, France.

Introduction: Drug-mediated inhibition of bile salt efflux transporters may cause liver injury. In vitro prediction of drug effects toward canalicular and/or sinusoidal efflux of bile salts from human hepatocytes is therefore a major issue, which can be addressed using liver cell-based assays.

Area Covered: This review, based on a thorough literature search in the scientific databases PubMed and Web of Science, provides key information about hepatic transporters implicated in bile salt efflux, the human liver cell models available for investigating functional inhibition of bile salt efflux, the different methodologies used for this purpose, and the modes of expression of the results.

Mixed neuroendocrine-non-neuroendocrine neoplasm (MiNEN) of the colon is rare with a poor prognosis. Since the first description of a mixed neoplasm 100 years ago, the nomenclature has evolved, most recently with the 2022 World Health Organization (WHO) classification system. We describe our experience of a case of locoregionally advanced MiNEN of the descending colon treated with curative laparoscopic resection and adjuvant chemotherapy.

Innovative capsulation and microencapsulation of plant hormones: a strategy to combat plant pathogens.

Cell Mol Biol (Noisy-le-grand)

January 2025

Department of Biotechnology, Faculty of Agriculture, Tarbiat Modares University, Tehran, Iran.

One of the prevailing trends in contemporary agriculture is the application of biological control. Nevertheless, several reports suggest that biocontrol bacteria exhibit poor survival rates in host plants. Consequently, the concept of shielding biological control agents by encapsulating them in outer coatings has gained popularity.

The future of lactoferrin: A closer look at LipoDuo technology.

J Liposome Res

January 2025

Samarth Biorigins LLP, KIADB Industrial Area, Tumkur, India.

Background: Lactoferrin (Lf), a multifunctional glycoprotein known for its roles in immune modulation, iron metabolism, and antimicrobial activity, has limited therapeutic efficacy due to poor bioavailability. Liposomal encapsulation of lactoferrin (LLf) offers a potential solution by improving its stability, absorption, and sustained release, making it a promising candidate for various clinical applications. This study aims to compare the effectiveness of LLf and plain Lf in cellular uptake, proliferation, and wound healing using HEK-293T and Caco-2 cell lines.

Prediction of oral diseases in care dependent older people.

BMC Oral Health

January 2025

Department of Odontology, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, Nørre Allé 20, Copenhagen, 2200, Denmark.

Background: A large number of older people depend on others for help with their daily personal care, including oral health care. Nursing home and elder-care staff often face challenges identifying older people, who are exposed to or at an increased risk of oral diseases. Thus, the aim of this study was to identify risk factors that non-dental care staff can use to identify older people at risk of oral diseases and poor oral hygiene.
