A new oligotrich similar to Novistrombidium was discovered in plankton samples from an artificial tributary of the Salado River, Buenos Aires province, Argentina, in summer 2010. Propecingulum fistoleramalliei sp. n. has an obovate and anteriorly truncated body, with a conspicuous ventral furrow, is flattened ventrally, and has a prominent right apical protrusion. It temporarily attaches to the substratum by a posterior mucous thread. Rod-shaped extrusomes arranged equidistantly and insert directly above the girdle kinety. The macronucleus is globular to ellipsoidal. The contractile vacuole is located in the left, anterior quarter of the cell and the adoral zone is composed of 30-35 collar, 9-14 buccal, and two thigmotactic membranelles. The girdle kinety is dextrally spiraled and ventrally open; the ventral kinety is posterior to anterior end of the girdle kinety. The oral primordium develops posterior to the right thigmotactic membranelle and anterior the stripe of extrusomes above left, lateral portion of the girdle kinety. The SSUrDNA phylogeny confirms one more time that Novistrombidium is not monophyletic; consequently, we elevate the subgenus Propecingulum up to genus rank and redefine the genus Novistrombidium.

Strombidium is a species-rich genus of oligotrichid ciliates mainly inhabiting the marine pelagial. In molecular phylogenies, the genus emerged as non-monophyletic, and cladistic analyses suggest that it is largely characterized by plesiomorphies. A reliable split of the genus and the establishment of new genera necessitate, however, support by novel morphological and/or ultrastructural features.

Ciliates belonging to the class Plagiopylea are obligate anaerobes that are often neglected due to their cryptic lifestyles, difficulty of observation, and overall under-sampling. Here, we investigate two species, namely Trimyema claviforme Kahl, 1933 and Plagiopyla nasuta Stein, 1860, collected in China from marine and freshwater anaerobic sediments, respectively. A complete morphological dataset, together with SSU rRNA gene sequence data were obtained and used to diagnose the species.

The morphology of two oligotrich ciliates, Pelagostrombidium fallax (Zacharias, 1895) Krainer, 1991 and Limnostrombidium viride (Stein, 1867) Krainer, 1995, collected from a freshwater pond in northern China, was studied based on live observation and protargol staining. Currently, undescribed features in the girdle kinety in P. fallax are (a) sparsely spaced single argyrophilic basal bodies in the shoulder region and (b) a U-shape formed below the buccal peristome.

The first transmission and scanning electron microscopical studies in combination with freeze-fracture technology have disclosed some important morphological and ultrastructural features in the freshwater oligotrichid . (I) The dikinetids (paired basal bodies) of the girdle kinety have a club-shaped cilium associated only with each left basal body. The electron-dense (paraflagellar) body on one side of its "9×2+2"-axoneme and the regular array of intramembranous particles indicate a sensory, perhaps photoreceptor function of these club-shaped cilia.
