Problem: The Penn State College of Medicine (PSCOM) faced escalating reports of learner mistreatment in 2013-2017. As systems were implemented to gather and respond to student reports, faculty members expressed concern that these were creating a culture that focused on negative behaviors to the exclusion of acknowledging outstanding teaching that was also occurring.
Approach: The Exceptional Teacher Initiative was introduced in August 2017 to attempt to shift the institutional conversation around learner mistreatment by balancing reports of mistreatment with reports highlighting examples of excellent teaching considered in-line with organizational values. The primary goals of the program were to make it easy for students to submit narratives describing outstanding teaching experiences and to capture the nuances of what the teacher did that were notable to the student. Students were invited to write about teachers who challenged and changed them. Narratives were sent to the named teachers and their educational and clinical leaders.
Outcomes: Over the first 12 months of the Exceptional Teacher Initiative, learners submitted 553 narratives naming 253 different individuals across 37 departments. Faculty members and students expressed appreciation for this effort to highlight the positive. A monthly Exceptional Moments in Teaching feature was introduced in 2018, in which a named educator is featured prominently across the PSCOM.
Next Steps: Future plans include examining the impact of being named an exceptional teacher, ways exceptional teachers create respectful teaching interactions, and common threads within student narratives that illuminate specific techniques, behaviors, and attitudes that create exceptional teaching experiences.

Aluminum-carbon nanotube (Al-CNT) composites represent a cutting-edge class of materials characterized by their exceptional mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties, making them highly promising for aerospace, automotive, electronics, and energy applications. This review systematically examines the impact of various fabrication methods, including conventional powder metallurgy, diffusion and reaction coupling, as well as adhesive and reaction bonding on the microstructure and performance of Al-CNT composites. The analysis emphasizes the critical role of CNT dispersion, interfacial bonding, and the formation of reinforcing phases, such as AlC and AlO, in determining the mechanical strength, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and thermal stability of these materials.

To address the toxicity concerns of aluminum ions (Al) due to their widespread environmental presence, a novel chromone-derived fluorescent probe, (E)-N'-((4-oxo-4H-chromen-3-yl)methylene)benzohydrazide (NMA), was developed for dual-mode detection combining colorimetric and fluorometric channels. Upon chelation with Al in a 1:1 stoichiometric ratio, NMA exhibited a significant fluorescence enhancement at 510 nm, accompanied by a rapid and visible color change due to the chelation-enhanced fluorescence (CHEF) effect, achieving an exceptional detection limit of 9 nM-well below the World Health Organization's recommended threshold. The reversible binding of NMA, demonstrated through sequential addition of Al and EDTA, enabled the construction of an INHIBIT molecular logic gate, broadening its potential for smart sensing applications.

Characterized by its exceptional electrical, physical, and chemical properties, 1-phenyl-1-xylylethane (PXE) insulating oil finds extensive application in the realm of power capacitor insulation. In this study, molecular simulation is employed to investigate the reactivity of PXE insulating oil molecules and the impact of temperature on water diffusion behavior in PXE insulating oil, as well as its solubility. The findings demonstrate a higher propensity for hydrogen atoms in nucleophilic and electrophilic positions within PXE insulating oil molecules to interact with water molecules.
