A passive photo-writing approach for optical data recording is described. Poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) has been demonstrated as a photochemically deoxygenating polymeric matrix in which phosphorescent images from a molecular phosphor could be written by photo-activation and be competitively erased by diffusional oxygen quenching.

Organic red/near-infrared (NIR) room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) holds significant potential for autofluorescence-free bioimaging and biosensing due to its prolonged persistent luminescence and exceptional penetrability. However, achieving activatable red/NIR organic RTP probes with tunable emission in aqueous solution remains a formidable challenge. Here we report on aqueous organic RTP probes with red/NIR phosphorescence intensity and lifetime amplification.

Imaging luminescence kinetics is invaluable in many fields, including biology and chemistry. However, the luminescence lifetime of most photo-activated states is in the low ns-µs range and its measurement requires adding costly image intensifiers to cameras to access the fast phenomena present. Here, the Rectified Imaging under Optical Modulation (RIOM) and Heterodyne Imaging under Optical Modulation (HIOM) protocols make this possible with standard low-cost cameras only, even under ambient light.

Two-photon phosphorescence lifetime microscopy has been a key tool for studying cerebral oxygenation in mice. However, the accuracy of the partial pressure of oxygen (pO) measurements is affected by out-of-focus signal. In this work, we applied reconfigurable differential aberration imaging to characterize and correct for out-of-focus signal contamination in intravascular pO imaging.

Chloride is the most abundant anion in cells and plays many critical roles in maintaining cellular homeostasis. However, current chloride indicators are rare with inherent sensitivity in their emission properties, such as vulnerability to pH changes or short emission lifetimes. These limitations restrict their application in aqueous media and imaging.

Carbene-metal-amide (CMA) complexes have diverse applications in luminescence, imaging and sensing. In this study, we designed and synthesized a series of CMA complexes, which were subsequently doped into a PMMA host. These materials demonstrate light-induced dynamic phosphorescence, attributed to their long intrinsic triplet state lifetime (τ, in the μs-ms scale), high intersystem crossing (ISC) rate constant (k, up to 10 s), and bright phosphorescence.
