Published: March 2019

This was a retrospective descriptive study of deaths in the Republic of Kiribati from 2005 to 2014. We determined the proportion of all deaths that are ill-defined and described the characteristics of these ill-defined deaths. There were 5618 deaths between 2005 to 2014; of these 1049 (18.7%) were ill-defined. Of these, 576 (54.9%) were male. Those aged 65 years and above had the highest proportion of ill-defined deaths at 40% (n= 415), followed by children aged 0-15 years (29.6%, n=310). Further, 47.7% (n=500) of ill-defined deaths were reported by staff from health dispensaries. When the ill-defined deaths were further categorised according to their R code (with the R code being a group of ill-defined deaths, with sub-groups), 30.5% (n=320) had unknown cause of death, while 29.3% (n=307) had general symptoms and signs. Almost one fifth of deaths in Kiribati were ill-defined, indicating that the reporting on cause of death can be improved through Medical Certification on Causes of Death training and by other means. Improved cause of death reporting will allow the Ministry of Health and Medical Services to better allocate resources, plan health care service delivery and support the development of evidence based preventative and curative policies.

Objective: Meningiomas are a molecularly ill-defined heterogeneous group of indolent intracranial tumors. Though, WHO grade 1 tumors are histologically benign, sometimes they transform into malignant and may be recurrent which remains always challenging to clinicians. Therefore, the current study sought to discover the clinical relevance of CD44 in meningioma patients.

Beyond the underlying cause of death: an algorithm to study multi-morbidity at death.

Popul Health Metr

December 2024

Institut National d'Etudes Demographiques (INED) 9 Cours Des Humanités, CS 50004, 93322, Aubervilliers Cedex, Paris, France.

Background: In countries with high life expectancy, a growing share of the population is living with several diseases, a situation referred to as multi-morbidity. In addition to health data, cause-of-death data, based on the information reported on death certificates, can help monitor and characterize this situation. This requires going beyond the underlying cause of death and accounting for all causes on the death certificates which may have played various roles in the morbid process, depending on how they relate to each other.

[Cause of death statistics-how to avoid misinterpretation of mortality data].

National mortality registers provide important data for monitoring population health. Analyses of cardiovascular mortality in particular-and especially mortality from coronary heart disease-are frequently the basis for conclusions about the quality of healthcare and prevention. To be able to interpret disease-specific mortality differences between countries and changes in mortality over time, it is necessary to know the basics of monocausal cause-of-death statistics and the associated limitations in comparative statements.

Introduction: We studied changes in death statistics by deaths from diabetes mellitus (DM) after introduction of mandatory online death certificate (DC) submission in Norway.

Materials And Methods: Information on deaths with DM mentioned in the DCs from year 2017 (DCs submitted on paper) to 2022 (DCs submitted online) was collected from the Norwegian Cause of Death Registry (NCoDR), Sex, age, year of death and type of DC (paper (pDC) vs electronic (eDC)) was registered. In DCs with DM as underlying cause of death (UCOD), all codes (International classification of diseases, 10th revision (ICD-10)), their original position in the DC and place of death were collected.

Alcohol misuse increases infections and cancer fatalities, but mechanisms underlying its toxicity are ill-defined. We show that alcohol treatment of human tracheobronchial epithelial cells leads to inactivation of giantin-mediated Golgi targeting of glycosylation enzymes. Loss of core 2 N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase 1, which uses only giantin for Golgi targeting, coupled with shifted targeting of other glycosylation enzymes to Golgi matrix protein 130-Golgi reassembly stacking protein 65, the site normally used by core 1 enzyme, results in loss of sialyl Lewis x and increase of sialyl Lewis a and α2-6sialo mucin O-glycans.
