Comparison of DNA extraction procedures for detection of Mycoplasma bovis directly from extended bovine semen straw samples using a commercial M. bovis PCR.

BMC Vet Res

Article Synopsis
  • Mycoplasma bovis was first identified in New Zealand in 2017, leading to strict biosecurity measures, including mandatory screening of bovine semen for the pathogen before it can be exported.
  • The Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) requires that semen samples are not centrifuged before DNA extraction to prevent the importation of M. bovis, and several DNA preparation methods were evaluated to meet these stringent guidelines.
  • The results showed that the real-time PCR (rtPCR) test had a perfect sensitivity and specificity of 100% for detecting M. bovis, with non-centrifuged samples yielding better detection performance, while maintaining no interference from other Mycoplasma species.

Lakes are sentinels of environmental changes within their watersheds including those induced by a changing climate and anthropogenic activities. In particular, contamination originating from point or non-point sources (NPS) within watersheds might be reflected in changes in the bacterial composition of lake water. We assessed the abundance of potentially pathogenic bacteria (PPB) sampled in 413 lakes within 8 southern Canadian ecozones that represent a wide diversity of lakes and watershed land use.

Crosstalk between gut microbiota and host lipid metabolism in a mouse model of alcoholic liver injury by chronic baijiu or ethanol feeding.

A growing body of evidence highlights the important role of gut microbiota and host metabolism, particularly for lipid metabolism, in the development and progression of alcoholic liver disease (ALD). However, the effects of fermented alcoholic beverages on gut microbiota and host lipid metabolism remain under-investigated. Moreover, the crosstalk between gut microbiota and host lipid metabolism is still unclear in experimental ALD.

Artificial model colloids are of special interest in the development of advanced sterile filters, as they are able to efficiently separate pleomorphic, highly deformable and infectious bacteria such as mycoplasma, which, until now, has been considered rather challenging and laborious. This study presents a full range of different soft to super soft synthetic polymeric microgels, including two types with similar hydrodynamic mean diameter, i.e.

The C5-methylation of uracil to form 5-methyluracil (mU) is a ubiquitous base modification of nucleic acids. Four enzyme families have converged to catalyze this methylation using different chemical solutions. Here, we investigate the evolution of 5-methyluracil synthase families in , a class of bacteria that has undergone extensive genome erosion.
