Red-light photosensory proteins, phytochromes, link light activation to biological functions by interconverting between two conformational states. For this, they undergo large-scale secondary and tertiary changes which follow small-scale Z to E bond photoisomerization of the covalently bound bilin chromophore. The complex network of amino acid interactions in the chromophore-binding pocket plays a central role in this process. Highly conserved Y263 and H290 have been found to be important for the photoconversion yield, while H260 has been identified as important for bilin protonation and proton transfer steps. Here, we focus on the roles these amino acids are playing in preserving the chemical properties of bilin in the resting Pr state of the photosensory unit of a bacteriophytochrome from Deinococcus radiodurans. By using pH-dependent UV-Vis spectroscopy and spectral decomposition modeling, we confirm the importance of H260 for biliverdin protonation. Further, we demonstrate that in the canonical bacteriophytochromes, the pK value of the phenol group of the Y263 is uncommonly low. This directly influences the protonation of the bilin molecule and likely the functional properties of the protein. Our study expands the understanding of the tight interplay between the nearby amino acids and bilin in the phytochrome family.

The CFH group can act as a hydrogen bond donor, serving as a potential surrogate for OH or SH groups but with a weaker hydrogen bond donation ability. Here, we describe a series of CFH group-containing moieties that facilitate hydrogen bond interactions. We survey hydrogen bond donation ability using several established methods, including H NMR-based hydrogen bond acidity determination, UV-vis spectroscopy titration with Reichardt's dye, and H NMR titration using tri--butylphosphine oxide as a hydrogen bond acceptor.

Elucidating the structural dynamics of ligand-stabilized noble metal nanoclusters (NCs) is critical for understanding their properties and for developing applications. Ligand rearrangement at NC surfaces is an important contributor to structural change. In this study, we investigate the dynamic behavior of ligand-protected [Ag(L)] NC's (L = 1,3-benzenedithiol) interacting with secondary ligand 2,2'-[1,4-phenylenebis (methylidynenitrilo)] bis[benzenethiol] (referred to as ).

Background/purpose: Various pulp-covering materials offer advantages in regenerative root canal treatment, but each has limitations, highlighting the need for more effective antibacterial strategies for pulp repair and regeneration. Mesoporous bioactive glasses (MBG) show significant biological activity, making them valuable in tissue/dental repair. Silver-incorporated MBG exhibits promising antibacterial effects against various bacteria; copper ions are crucial in regulating angiogenesis signals.

The performance of an optoelectronic device is largely dependent on the light harvesting properties of the active material as well as the dynamic behaviour of the photoexcited charge carriers upon absorption of light. Recently, atomically thin two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (2D TMDCs) have garnered attention as highly prospective materials for advanced ultrathin solar cells and other optoelectronic applications, owing to their strong interaction with electromagnetic radiation, substantial optical conductivity, and impressive charge carrier mobility. WSe is one such extremely promising solar energy material.
