Given the unique properties of fluorine, and the ability of fluorination to change the properties of organic molecules, there is significant interest from medicinal chemists in innovative methodologies that enable the synthesis of new fluorinated motifs. State-of-the-art syntheses of α-fluorinated carbonyl compounds invariably rely on electrophilic fluorinating agents, which can be strongly oxidizing and difficult to handle. Here we show that reversing the polarity of the enolate partner to that of an enolonium enables nucleophilic fluorinating agents to be used for direct chemoselective α-C-H-fluorination of amides. Reduction of these products enables facile access to β-fluorinated amines and the value of this methodology is shown by the easy preparation of a number of fluorinated analogues of drugs and agrochemicals. A fluorinated analogue of citalopram, a marketed antidepressant drug, is presented as an example of the preserved biological activity after fluorination.

Organic photosensitizers (PSs) possessing NIR-II emission and photodynamic/photothermal effect have received a great sense of attention for their cutting-edge applications in imaging-guided multimodal phototherapy. However, it is highly challenging to design efficient PSs with high luminescence and phototherapy performance simultaneously. In this study, a spiro-functionalization strategy is proposed to alleviate aggregate-caused quenching of PSs and promote photodynamic therapy, and the strategy is verified via a spiro[fluorine-9,9'-xanthene]-modified NIR-II PS (named SFX-IC) with an acceptor-donor-acceptor configuration.

Waterproof fatliquoring agents can transform leather from a hydrophilic state to a hydrophobic state in the wet process of leather production. However, traditional waterproof fatliquoring agents may cause environmental pollution. Fluorocarbons in fluorinated fatliquoring agents are difficult to degrade, and polyacrylic acid fatliquoring agents require chromium powder fixation.

Additives play a pivotal role in enhancing the efficiency of perovskite solar cells (PSCs), and carefully designed additives contribute to major breakthroughs in device performance. In this study, a series of novel A-π-A-type porphyrin derivatives-PPH-1, PPH-2, and PPF-1-are synthesized, each incorporating pyridyl groups, specifically engineered to function as passivation agents for PSCs. The electron-withdrawing properties of fluorine in PPF-1 increase the molecular polarity, thereby strengthening its interaction with the perovskite and enhancing the passivation efficacy.

Serotonergic 5-HT receptors in the cortex and other forebrain structures have been linked to cognitive, emotional and memory processes. In addition, dysfunction or altered expression of these receptors is associated with neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders. [F]R91150 is a candidate radiotracer for positron emission tomography (PET) imaging of 5-HT receptors, which showed promising properties in in vitro studies.
