We present the design, manufacturing technique, and characterization of a 3D-printed broadband graded index millimeter wave absorber. The absorber is additively manufactured using a fused filament fabrication 3D printer out of a carbon-loaded high impact polystyrene filament and is designed using a space-filling curve to optimize manufacturability using the said process. The absorber's reflectivity is measured from 63 GHz to 115 GHz and from 140 GHz to 215 GHz and is compared to electromagnetic simulations. The intended application is for terminating stray light in cosmic microwave background telescopes, and the absorber has been shown to survive cryogenic thermal cycling.
In this study, a hybrid energy harvesting system based on a conventional solar cell combined with 3D-printed metasurface units is studied. Millimeter-scale metasurface units were fabricated via the stereolithography technique, and then they were covered with conductive silver paint, in order to achieve high electric conductivity. The performance of single, as well as two-unit metasurface harvesters, was thoroughly investigated.
In this study, an analytical model was developed to predict the sound absorption performance of fibrous absorbers fabricated using an extrusion-based three-dimensional (3D) printing method. The proposed model employs geometric design parameters, including the average fiber diameter and the horizontal and vertical fiber separations, to calculate the porosity, static airflow resistivity, tortuosity, and viscous and thermal characteristic lengths. These transport parameters are then used within the Johnson-Champoux-Allard semiempirical formulation to predict the normal incidence sound absorption coefficient.
K-band radar waves have high penetration and low attenuation coefficients. However, the wavelength of this radar wave is relatively short; thus, designing and preparing both broadband and wide-angle radar wave absorbers in this band presents considerable challenges. In this study, a resin-based K-band radar wave absorber with a biomimetic lotus leaf structure was designed and formed by UV curing.
Unlabelled: Focused ultrasound (FUS) combined with circulating microbubbles (MBs) can be employed for non-invasive, localized agent delivery across the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Previous work has demonstrated the feasibility of clinical-scale transmit-receive phased arrays for performing transcranial therapies under MB imaging feedback.
Objective: This study aimed to design, construct, and evaluate a dual-mode phased array for MB-mediated FUS brain therapy in small animals.
An array of compact, high-bandwidth (>200 MHz) and low-cost optical photodiodes has been developed and implemented on the PHASe MApping (PHASMA) experiment. Using purpose-built electronics, an array of 16 photodetectors was constructed and used to monitor broadband (1-5 MHz) fluctuations in light intensity emitted by flux ropes undergoing electron-only magnetic reconnection. These measurements reveal a swath of oscillatory behavior, including wave propagation inward toward the diffusion region at approximately the local electron Alfvén speed.
