A generalized theory of nucleation and growth of crystals in a metastable (supercooled or supersaturated) liquid is developed taking into account two principal effects: the diffusion mechanism of the particle-size distribution function in the space of particle radii and the unsteady-state growth rates of individual crystals induced by fluctuations in external temperature or concentration field. A system of the Fokker-Planck and balance integro-differential equations is formulated and analytically solved in a parametric form for arbitrary nucleation kinetics and arbitrary growth rates of individual crystals. The particle-size distribution function and system metastability are found in an explicit form. The Weber-Volmer-Frenkel-Zel'dovich and Meirs kinetic mechanisms, as well as the unsteady-state growth rates of nuclei (Alexandrov & Alexandrova 2019 Phil. Trans. R. Soc. A 377, 20180209 ( doi:10.1098/rsta.2018.0209 )), are considered as special cases. Some potential biomedical applications of the present theory for crystal growth from supersaturated solutions are discussed. The theory is compared with experimental data on protein and insulin crystallization (growth dynamics of the proteins lysozyme and canavalin as well as of bovine and porcine insulin is considered). The hat-shaped particle-size distribution functions for lysozyme and canavalin crystals as well as for bovine and porcine insulin are found. This article is part of the theme issue 'Heterogeneous materials: metastable and non-ergodic internal structures'.

Inorganic photochromic materials offer several advantages over organic compounds, including relatively inexpensive and higher thermal stability. However, tuning their color with the same component has remained a significant challenge. In this study, we demonstrate that the photochromic color of Cu-doped ZnS nanocrystals (NCs), which is initially pale yellow before light irradiation, can be tuned from gray to brown by adjusting the surface stoichiometry of Zn and S, which is controlled through the use of thiol and non-thiol ligands.

State estimation for large-scale non-Gaussian dynamic systems remains an unresolved issue, given nonscalability of the existing particle filter algorithms. To address this issue, this paper extends the Langevinized ensemble Kalman filter (LEnKF) algorithm to non-Gaussian dynamic systems by introducing a latent Gaussian measurement variable to the dynamic system. The extended LEnKF algorithm can converge to the right filtering distribution as the number of stages become large, while inheriting the scalability of the LEnKF algorithm with respect to the sample size and state dimension.

Objective: This study focuses on the development and evaluation of nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) loaded with aloperine as a potential therapeutic approach for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension.

Methods: The NLCs were designed to enhance the solubility, stability, and bioavailability of aloperine, a compound with vasodilatory and anti-inflammatory properties. Through a series of experiments including single-factor experimentation, transmission electron microscopy, high-performance liquid chromatography, in vivo pharmacokinetics, and tissue distribution studies, we assessed the physicochemical properties, drug release profiles, and in vitro and in vivo performance of this novel nanocarrier.

This study investigates the effects of varying exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) rates and temperatures on the combustion and emissions characteristics of a compression ignition engine fueled with hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO). Understanding these effects is essential for optimizing renewable fuel applications in compression ignition engines, contributing to cleaner combustion, and supporting sustainable transportation initiatives. The experiments revealed that increasing the EGR rate to 20% not only reduces NOx emissions by approximately 25% but also increases smoke by around 15%, highlighting a trade-off between NOx and particulate matter control.

Nowadays, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been emerged as an efficient platform for enzyme immobilization due to their high porosity, tunability, and chemical versatility. In this study, a series of hybrid lipase@NKMOF-101-M (M = Mg, Mn, Zn, Co, or Ni) biocatalysts were constructed through a facile in situ encapsulation method, and the encapsulation and immobilization of lipase in MOFs were carefully validated. The catalytic activity of lipase@NKMOF-101-Mn was 2-fold higher than that of lipase@ZIF-8 and 3-fold higher than that of lipase@MCM-41 due to its excellent dispersibility and hydrophobicity in hexane.
