Nocardia species usually cause opportunistic infections, and the frequency of these infections is increasing owing to the growing population of immunocompromised hosts. However, Nocardia may sometimes causes an infectious disease in immunocompetent hosts. Herein, we report two cases of pulmonary nocardiasis in immunocompetent individuals, whose chest computed tomography (CT) findings mimicked bronchiectasis. Samples of bronchalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid obtained by bronchoscopy showed filamentous, branching, gram-positive rods, acid-fast filamentous branching rods, and a colony of suspected Nocardia was cultured. Based on 16sRNA and hsp65 gene sequence analysis, case 1 was identified as N. cyriacigeorgica, but case 2 was not matched. The patients responded well to treatment with the combination of sulfamethoxazole and linezolid.

Nocardiosis in domestic ferrets (Mustela putorius furo).

J Comp Pathol

January 2025

Histologia i Anatomia Patològica, Facultat de Veterinària (UAB), 08193 Bellaterra (Barcelona), Spain.

Nocardia spp are ubiquitous, gram-positive, variably acid-fast, branching and beaded filamentous, facultative intracellular bacteria that are resistant to phagocytosis and can cause localized or systemic disease in a variety of mammals, including humans, as well as in birds, fish and reptiles. Seventeen pet domestic ferrets (Mustela putorius furo) were diagnosed with nocardiosis by several methods including cytological evaluation, histopathology, Ziehl-Neelsen staining and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). All except two ferrets were 2 years old or older at the time of clinical presentation.

Fungal keratitis caused by : a case report.

Front Med (Lausanne)

December 2024

Department of Ophthalmology, Ningbo Yinzhou No.2 Hospital, Ningbo Urology and Nephrology Hospital, Ningbo, Zhejiang, China.

Background: We report a rare case of fungal keratitis caused by , a filamentous fungus that is widely distributed in soil and graminaceous plants.

Case Presentation: A 40-year-old Mongoloid male patient came to our outpatient clinic with painful swelling of the left eye and redness, after being cut by a tree branch 1 week prior. After examination, the patient was diagnosed with a corneal ulcer of the left eye, and was given levofloxacin eye drops and levofloxacin ophthalmic gel.

Light intensity-regulated glycogen synthesis and pollutant removal in microalgal-bacterial granular sludge for wastewater treatment.

Water Res

March 2025

Engineering Laboratory of Low-Carbon Unconventional Water Resources Utilization and Water Quality Assurance, College of Environmental Science and Engineering, Nankai University, Tianjin, 300350, PR China.

As light intensity plays a pivotal role in the microalgal-bacterial granular sludge (MBGS) process, understanding its impact on system performance and energy dynamics is essential. This study investigated the effects of varying light intensities (20, 100, 200, and 300 μ mol/m²/s) on the performance of MBGS in urban wastewater treatment, with a particular focus on glycogen accumulation and pollutant removal. The results demonstrated that light intensity significantly influenced microbial community structure, glycogen accumulation, and pollutant removal efficiency.

Bacteria encounter numerous stressors in their constantly changing environments and have evolved many methods to deal with stressors quickly and effectively. One well-known and broadly conserved stress response in bacteria is the stringent response, mediated by the alarmone (p)ppGpp. (p)ppGpp is produced in response to amino acid starvation and other nutrient limitations and stresses and regulates both the activity of proteins and expression of genes.
