Purpose: To review the management outcomes of black diaphragm intraocular (BDI) lens implantation in Arab patients with aniridia.
Methods: Patients with aniridia undergone BDI lens implantation at our institution between 2013 and 2014 were included. Uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), manifest refraction, and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) were evaluated before and 6 months and yearly after BDI lens implant surgery until the last visit. Intra- and postoperative complications were noted.
Results: Our series comprised 14 patients (8 males) with aniridia. The median duration of follow-up was 30 months (25% quartile). Ocular parameters, refractive status, and vison were all significantly improved at the last follow-up compared to the preoperative values ( < 0.05 for all comparisons). All patients reported a significant decrease in photophobia and glare. Postoperatively, 11 eyes (78%) gained 2 or more lines of UCVA. At the last follow-up, BCVA increased by 2 or more lines in all cases. Early postoperative complications included main wound leakage (one eye) and anterior chamber hyphema (one eye). Late (≥6 months) complications included corneal decompensation (one eye), failed penetrating keratoplasty graft (2 eyes), and subluxation of a scleral fixated BDI lens (one eye). Surgical interventions performed to manage complications included penetrating keratoplasty in 2 eyes with corneal decompensation and failed graft (one each), and re-suturing of a subluxated intraocular lens (one eye).
Conclusion: BDI lenses seem to be a safe and effective iris prosthetic with intraocular lens combination surgery for patients with congenital or traumatic aniridia. Periodic evaluation and prompt management of complications are recommended.

This study aimed to evaluate the clinical benefits of incorporating a widefield lens (WFL) in optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) in patients with retinal vascular diseases in comparison to standard single-shot OCT-A scans. Sixty patients with retinal vascular diseases including diabetic retinopathy (DR) and retinal vein occlusion (RVO) were recruited. Pathogen whole-genome sequencing has become an important tool for understanding the transmission and epidemiology of infectious diseases. It has improved our understanding of sources of infection and transmission routes for important healthcare-associated pathogens, including Clostridioides difficile and Staphylococcus aureus. Transmission from known infected or colonized patients in hospitals may explain fewer cases than previously thought and multiple introductions of these pathogens from the community may play a greater a role.

Salt metathesis reactions between a low-valent rhenium(i) complex, Na[Re(η5-Cp)(BDI)] (BDI = N,N'-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-3,5-dimethyl-β-diketiminate), and a series of amidinate-supported tetrylenes of the form ECl[PhC(NtBu)2] (E = Si, Ge, Sn) led to rhenium metallotetrylenes Re(E[PhC(NtBu)2])(η5-Cp)(BDI) (E = Si (1a), Ge (2), Sn (4)) with varying extents of Re-E multiple bonding. Whereas the rhenium-stannylene 4 adopts a σ-metallotetrylene arrangement featuring a Re-E single bond, the rhenium-silylene (1a) and -germylene (2) both engage in π-interactions to form short Re-E multiple bonds. Temperature was found to play a crucial role in reactions between Na[Re(η5-Cp)(BDI)] and SiCl[PhC(NtBu)2], as manipulation of reaction conditions led to isolation of an unusual rhenium-silane, (BDI)Re(μ-η5:η1-C5H4)(SiH[PhC(NtBu)2]) (1b) and a dinitrogen bridged rhenium-silylene, (η5-Cp)(BDI)Re(μ-N2)Si[PhC(NtBu)2] (1c), in addition to 1a.

In this article, we report our proof-of-principle design and experimental commissioning of a broadly tunable and low-cost transverse focusing lens system for MeV-energy electron beams. The lens system based on electromagnetic (EM) quadrupoles has been built as a part of the existing instrument for ultra-fast electron diffraction (UED) experiments at the Accelerator Test Facility II (ATF-II) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). We experimentally demonstrated the independent control of the size and divergence of the beam with the charge ranging from 1 to 13 pC.
