The ordering of endohedral clusterfullerenes Sc3N@C80 and YSc2N@C80 co-crystallized with Ni(OEP) and isolated complexes with Ni(OEP) have been investigated theoretically. Having used multiple orientations of M3N clusters inside the cages with Fibonacci sampling, we describe the effect of intermolecular interactions on the orientation of the endohedral cluster.

In the present manuscript the authors show the progress recorded regarding the main synthesis methods of metal endo-fullerenes. Shown, that nowadays, the most productive and common method of producing endohedral fullerenes is the electric arc process due to the fact that (a) it is simple enough to introduce atoms into the plasma from solids and gases; (b) its performance is the highest among other methods; (c) gives a wide range of produced types of metallofullerenes in an inert atmosphere-mono-, di-, tri-metalfullerenes, metal carbide clusters, in a reactive atmosphere (N₂, NH₃)-metal nitride and cyanide clusters, heterofullerenes; (d) provides the greatest energy potential, which is likely to allow the introduction into the cells of fullerene molecules metal atoms with higher ionization energies than titanium (≥7 eV). The yield of metal endofullerenes is substantially higher than the "empty" fullerenes.

Endohedral metallofullerenes have greatly expanded the range of the fullerene family due to their nesting structure and unusual encapsulated clusters protected by a fullerene cage. Herein, we report a metallofullerene ScCNH@-C, which has a scandium tetrahedron supported by H and CN anions inside fullerene C. ScCNH@-C has a rare multilayer nesting structure, and the internal ScCNH is the most complex endohedral cluster disclosed to date.

Systematic exploration of the synthesis of mixed-metal Dy-M nitride clusterfullerenes (NCFs, M = Gd, Er, Tm, Lu) is performed, and the impact of the second metal on the relative yield is evaluated. We demonstrate that the ionic radius of the metal appears to be the main factor allowing explanation of the relative yields in Dy-M mixed-metal systems with M = Sc, Lu, Er, and Gd. At the same time, Dy-Tm NCFs show anomalously low yields, which is not consistent with the relatively small ionic radius of Tm but can be explained by the high third ionization potential of Tm.

Despite recent successes in preparing three-dimensional crystals of empty fullerenes, such as C and C , 3D endohedral fullerene crystals, and especially hollow nanostructures, have been scarcely reported. A universal approach has now been developed to prepare shape-tunable 3D crystals of several metal nitride clusterfullerenes, including cubes and dice (hollow cubes with holes at the center of each face), which can be readily switched by changing the volume ratio of good (mesitylene) and poor (isopropanol) solvents. Synchrotron-based soft X-ray nano-computed tomography was used to unambiguously identify the interior microstructure of the dice-shaped crystals of Tb N@C , and especially the depth of the hole at each face, confirming that the dice has a solid center and the holes are not interconnected.
