Nano-objects are favored structures for applications such as catalysis and sensing. Although they already provide a large surface-to-volume ratio, this ratio can be further increased by shape-selective plating of the nanostructure surfaces. This process combines the conformity of autocatalytic deposition with the defined nucleation and growth characteristics of colloidal nanoparticle syntheses. However, many aspects of such reactions are still not fully understood. In this study, we investigate in detail the growth of spiky nickel nanotubes in polycarbonate template membranes. One distinctive feature of our synthesis is the simultaneous growth of nanospikes on both the inside and outside of nanotubes while the tubes are still embedded in the polymer. This is achieved by combining the plating process with locally enhanced in situ etching of the poylmer template, for which we propose a theory. Electron microscopy investigations reveal twinning defects as the driving force for the growth of crystalline nanospikes. Deposit crystallinity is ensured by the reducing agent hydrazine. Iminodiacetic acid is not only used as a complexing agent during synthesis but apparently also acts as a capping agent and limits random nucleation on the spike facets. Finally, we apply our synthesis to templates with interconnected pores to obtain free-standing spiky nickel nanotube networks, demonstrating its ability to homogeneously coat substrates with extended inner surfaces and to operate in nanoscale confinement.

Flexible capacitive pressure sensors have many important applications but usually exhibit a highly non-linear response as the sensitivity drops dramatically towards high pressure. Herein, we propose a novel strategy to achieve high linearity over a broad sensing range by using percolative composites as the dielectric layer. The linear response is attributed to the fast increase in dielectric constant that can compensate for the sensitivity drop caused by the decreased compressibility during compression.

This work presents a comparison between three piezoresistive composite materials based on nanostructured conductive fillers in a polydimethylsiloxane insulating elastomeric matrix for sensing applications. Without any mechanical deformation upon an applied bias, the prepared composites present an insulating electric behavior, while, when subjected to mechanical load, the electric resistance is reduced exponentially. Three different metal fillers were tested: commercial nickel and copper spiky-particles and synthesized highly-pointed gold nanostars.

Plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII) is an effective method to increase the corrosion resistance and inhibit nickel release from orthopedic NiTi shape memory alloy. Nitrogen was plasma-implanted into NiTi using different pulsing frequencies to investigate the effects on the nano-scale surface morphology, structure, wettability, as well as biocompatibility. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results show that the implantation depth of nitrogen increases with higher pulsing frequencies.

Germline mutations in thyroid transcription factor 2 (TTF2) cause thyroid agenesis, spiky hair, and cleft palate, indicating thyroidal and extrathyroidal expression. We sought to investigate this by producing and applying an antibody to human TTF2. The coding region of human TTF2 was cloned into a bacterial expression vector, production of the soluble TTF2 protein optimized, and pure TTF2 obtained by nickel chromatography.
